Guest Jeff Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Hey I've got 2 computers in my home network, these computers are connected to each other via a router pc1 has winXP pro + sp2 pc2 has win2k3 Each computer can ping the other using it's IP address... but not by using netbios name. When I ping using netbios names I get this message: "Ping request could not find host PC4. Please check the name and try again." WINS is installed on the win2k3 computer The winXP computer are using dynamic IP (DHCP), while the win2k3 computer are using static IP address. The winXP computer has had the same IP address for years so I don't see any difference here between static and DHCP..... well, I'm a newbie on this so I can easly be wrong! Both computers are on the same subnet I've created an active directory on the win2k3 computer. an AD containing only the domain controller... I want my winXP machine to be member of this AD, but first I think these 2 computers must be able to ping each other using netbios names. As the win2k3 machine has AD it also have a configured DNS in WINS tab in "Advaced TCP/IP settings" on the winXP machine, should I enter IP address of the win2k3 computer? any suggestions?

Guest Jeff Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Re: unable to ping using netbios name I've fixed it so the computers can ping each other. But for this to work I had to turn off firewalls on both computers. But having firewall turned off is not an ideal thing. So here is the problem: what exception shall I allow on the firewalls so the computers can ping each other using netbios names ? Jeff

Guest Jeff Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Re: unable to ping using netbios name Thanks, both computers are running the "Windows firewall/Internet connection sharing" service Both computers are using the windows firewall.... that firewall which is installed when installing win2k3 and came with sp2 of winXP These 2 computers are connected to each other using a router/gateway. These 2 computers share the same internet connection. Internet cable from the ISP is connected to the Ethernet cable/DSL port on the router. I got internet via the cable. This router is an standard 3com router with hardware firewall... but in addition I would like both computers to have the windows firewall enabled.. Any suggestions? Jeff

I have 2 routers, one each for a different subnet and both subnets have machines getting their IP via DHCP and statically set IP's. The only times I run into problems being able to ping by UNC is when the service Windows firewall/Internet connection sharing" is not running. Maybe you can find something in any of these that may spark a clue: http://www.wown.com http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ http://www.homepcnetwork.com/ -- Brian A.
