I have an old Dell Dimension 8100 P4 1.3G. A new XP professional install has been done on the machine. The problem I have is when I try to install additional programs ranging from printer drivers to anti virus software I get the error message "This driver is not supported on windows 2000"

Any suggestions

As the PC is quite old - the chances are that it was never designed to use XP and therefore the drivers that you have are for an older OS and you need to goto the DELL homepage and find the additional drivers

All of the hardware is installed and working correctly. But if I try to install AVG anti virus for example just after clicking the setup icon, I get the response This driver is not supported on windows 2000.

I dont think the error is relating to the AV program but something else you have installed in regards to a driver.

are you running the AV from disk? in a CDROM etc?

When XP was installed, did you delete all of the partitions and create a new one?

Do you have more than one hard drive on the system?

OK from the start,

I brought the PC from ebay for my dad (he only uses one to chech emails) up untill now he has made do with a P1 running 95.

Anyway the last owner of the PC had just deleted all of their programs and not uninstalled them. It also came up with a "illegal version of XP installed".

So I installed partition magic and got rid of the hidden dell partition and did a full XP Professional new install.

It all installed OK without any problems and no trouble with any drivers of any type. The PC all works OK.

I then tried to install the software for his printer from an original CD (a two year old HP) this setup failed.

So I then tried AVG, This is the latest version I downloaded just a couple of weeks ago, is installed on my own laptop via memory stick.

I plugged the memory stick into my dads PC, it was recognised straight away, clicked the setup icon... same result as the printer setup.

Why didn't you use the XP Pro disk to delete the partitions and install?
