monitor turns off after increasing refresh rate on new pc

I have a monitor than supports 144hz. I connect it with HDMI, and it used to work great with 144hz on my old laptop. I recently got a new pc, with a 4090 and i9 13900k (so definitely good enough speccs), and i saw it was on 60hz. So I changed it back to 144, then the monitor went black and thhe signal button was still on but every now and then it would say no signal, but not go into standby. I plugged in a reserve monitor, which worked alright (i couldnt try 144hz on this monitor as it didnt support it). Anyone know how to fix this? After doing a clean install of Windows, the monitor works aga
