Confused about Microsoft MSLU Unicode install files

I'm trying to install an app, VLC media player, that requires

unicows.dll. So I went to this URL:

http://www.microsoft.com.nsatc.net/globaldev/handson/dev/mslu_announce.mspx

and downloaded MSLU for Win 98SE. But when I extracted the file, I get

two files, unicows.dll and unicows.pdb. I do NOT get unicows.lib,

which Microsoft seems to say is in the download.

So now I am wondering is this the correct thing for me to download? I

am not a developer, I just need the Unicode support in order to get

VLC media player to install on my computer.

Did I download the wrong thing? Where do I get unicows.lib, and is

that what I need?

Thanks to anyone who can provide direction. I haven't installed

anything yet.

The Unicode/unicows issue is an area of considerable debate/conflict in

9X/ME.

A primary aspect of the newer NT systems, there is no question of its

necessity [however it is in-built, and gets updates(because of its use by

various hacks and other), whereas 9X gets none]. On 9X/ME however, it is a

*self install* unless included with OR required by a specific

program/application.

There is/was concern for its installation in 9X due to the lack of NT

protections [and updates] related to Unicode aspects. It was during the

transitional 9X to XP era that this file became called by a number of

transitional/cross platform programs.

Media players sometimes require this due to the coding of certain

compressions/presentation files.

If you really want to use it, then expand the files directly into the

application directory rather than a true install SYSTEMWIDE. Often that will

be sufficient to allow the program to run, and still provide the system

protection [afforded by it NOT being actually installed].

It is the DLL [and related] that supplies the library functions the program

needs. The version I presently have downloaded has file dates of 12-07-04.

IT IS NOT, however, used or installed in my system [systemwide], though it

is in Windows Media Player, and has been used in several other progs via

their own coding/inclusions of Unicode.

So I intend no debate, just an FYI I suppose.

These are your two references for unicode support in W98.

http://www.microsoft.com.nsatc.net/globaldev/handson/dev/mslu_announce.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=73BA7BD7-ED06-4F0D-80A4-2A7EEAEE17E2&displaylang=en

You only need the LIB file if you are a developer and you need to ensure

correct unicode support in W9x-compatible applications.

Re: Confused about Microsoft MSLU Unicode install files

Thanks for the replies. MEB, the problem is that the media player

won't install due to the lack of Unicode. So I have to find a way to

put the unicode files into the media player's directory before the

install, and the directory doesn't exist until the install!

Well maybe I can create the directory before the install and put the

unicode in it and then let the install find it.

Thanks for the warning about not installing it systemwide!
