beginner Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Hello there, is there anybody who can help me with my problem(everyone who I ask hasn't got a clue) so I hope I can get the help here. The problem Im having is that I had to reinstall windows xp professional, but when I want get into the bios screen (so I can change boot sequence) it keeps asking me for password (I know what the p/word is) but when I try to type the p/word in it is not typing any letters, e.g. p/word, I have tried a new keyboard(same problem), also it must recognize the keyboard because when I press delete on start up to get to the bios screen it lets me press delete, I tried taking the battery out of the motherboard for a few minutes (I got told it resets all passwords), so if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. hope you can help, thanks Paul.:confused: Quote
Tony D Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Are you using a PS-2 or USB keyboard. I suggest if you're using a USB keyboard that you try a PS-2 version. beginner Posted September 26, 2008 Author Posted September 26, 2008 the keyboard I am using is the round one with pins not a usb, ps I have tried a new keyboard and I have also used the keyboard on this PC (the one im using now), im puzzled Quote
RandyL Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 OK it's a PS2 keyboard and it is working. You pulled the battery out so unless your setup has a BIOS password set by default you should have to enable a password once you're in the BIOS. Have you tried hitting the Enter key without putting in a password? Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Goku Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 What is the make and Model number of your PC? It might be that the BIOS password may be configured to allow on numeric inputs. -- Goku Quote

Guest Wolfeymole Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 The thing is Paul that I have trouble with is that this is obviously a bios password and upon all boot ups it would have asked you for it. You are unable to do nothing until that password is supplied and the generic keyboard drivers will have loaded. You also would have got a Keyboard not found error if the keyboard was not connected. You stated this; I have tried pressing enter instead of putting a password in, all I get is 3 tries then that,s it just gives me 3 attempts then reboots, it is booting from cd from when I installed xp, so I cant get in the bios to change boot sequenceThis indicates to me that the keyboard is working but your getting the password wrong. You say you installed XP but now want to change the boot sequence, why? The bios will rotate through the boot options until it finds an operating system and unless for some obscure reason you have disabled the hard drive there should be no issue here. Quote
beginner Posted September 27, 2008 Author Posted September 27, 2008 Thank's for all your help , but i am not getting keyboard error or anything like that, the only way how I can explain is that I reinstalled xp/home to xp/pro , so when I put disk into the pc it went through the routine loading set-up files, etc(checking pc hardware) all was fine then I formatted the drive,(deleted old xp files) partitioned 40gig for windows to run(the other 120gig for files, games, software ,etc.)all went well till now when it boots up I press delete to get into bios screen then it asks for password which I know is pumpkin(I know its a strange p/word, nickname for my daughter) but when I get prompted for p/word I try to type it but when I press letter "P" it doesn't print, the same with all the letter's, it then give,s me 3 attempts then wont let me get into bios, I am now going to try to reinstall xp/pro, I hope this might solve it, once again thank's for all your help. Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Well again I have to say I am unable to understand how you are going to achieve this. To me this scenario happens on boot up. 1: The pc boots and checks the system settings and then immediately puts the password screen up. 2: You input the password which is checked and then the bios searches for a boot loader. 3: Windows then loads from either a cd, hdd or lan. To reinstall you will have to enter the password to enter the bios to set the boot sequence. Quote
