Lost Folders in Windows 11 and now Back in Windows 10

I changed to windows 11 and found all my folders, adding them to my desktop. Used them throughout the day, everything was great. Then I shut down my computer and when I turned it back on I lost all of the folders. I went back to Windows 10 and have not been able to recover them. PLEASE I need help. I have been through all of the suggested ways of trying to find them ie "hide", recover etc. Unfortunately, I was not smart enough to do a back up. Do file recovery programs work?
