Crossposted to Win95 General Discussion.

 

The page http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/dta/plata01/ suggests that

the machine's running Windows 95 (which, like Win98, is no longer supported

by Microsoft).

Thanks PA Bear but, I can not get into DOS or the windows Control Panel,

which are required by the various options listed at that Dell site. The only

computer option I get at boot is ... Enter Password! Anything I type returns

with - Password is incorrect, System halted, Must power down.

You say you inherited this machine. Does the HDD contain information you

need to access (e.g., for personal or legal reasons) or do you just wanna

see if you can get it working and use it?

I have no idea as to what is on it. I got it from my daughter who got it

from her former employer. The company went out of business (another story)

and she was among the last to leave. After all equipment was sold off a

salvage company picked up the remnants. She was allowed to take some items

including this computer. Because it was locked by a password she asked me if

I would be interested in trying to fix it, as she was going to junk it. Just

a challenge on my part to see if I can get it to work. Possibly someone in

my family might keep it if it were any good? Sudy Nim

Have you tried using a 95/98 DOS boot disk?

Please read Read1st in the right pane for instructions on how to create the boot

disk from the downloaded file.

If it were a desktop, I would unplug the power to the motherboard and short

a Clear CMOS jumper for three or more seconds. How is this done inside a

laptop? Perhaps disassembling it to see if there is a similar jumper.

 

Once again, if I was unable to identify that jumper in a motherboard, I

would unplug the power cord, pull out the coin-shaped lithium battery and

any other peripheral that might carry power into this motherboard, and then,

short out the battery holder for a few seconds, then reassemle everything.
