How brittle is volume Deduplication on Winserver 2022?

Trying to test Deduplication using a VM machine, I’m finding it a real hit/miss if it actually works.

Testing goes like this.

  1. On Win host create virtual hard drive (VHD) load it with test data.
  2. Attach VHD to powered off test VM machine.
  3. Start test VM and enable the volume, give it a drive letter.
  4. Enable dedupe and start a dedupe job.
  5. Once dedupe has finished, record result. Blow away test data.
  6. Power down VM winserver and detach volume.

  7. On host reformat the VHD load more data.

Repeat test over again with new data starting #2.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When fails the dedupe job runs and finishes with one minute and does nothing. There's not much variation in the data we know it dedupes.

When it failed once I copied all the test data to another volume on the VM, disabled dedupe followed by formatting the volume. Copied all that data back – reenabled dedupe, it still failed.
