Control panel issue

Really hoping someone has a solution...

I am running Windows XP Professional SP2. I am the only user of my computer

and my account was set up with administrator rights. I had a trojan which is

now cleared. But the virus changed something in my registry so that I am now

locked out of any administrator functions - both in my user account AND under

the default Administrator account, even in safe mode.

I cannot access my control panel through the start menu or through start

-Run: control.exe, cannot right click on my computer to get properties,

cannot create new user accounts, etc. I always get a message that the

operation has been canceled due to restrictions on this computer.

I already tried a system restore but that did not bring back my control

panel or administrative rights.

Any assistance would be sincerely apprectiated.

Yep, - Was going to suggest a restore point, have you any registry

clean programs - one that just might have taken a backup at some

stage(as they often do), that you could restore from?

apart from that.... running short on ideas! unless you kow what that

Bug was, and could look up what it does - if so - could be the

registry changes have been documented somewhere.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

Web pages.

Help with malware:

All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for

malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you

owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see

what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure

of.
