Hi

I am getting warning windows every couple of minutes or so apparently from MS- Anti Virus in the for,m of two screens telling me to take action to deal with apparent viruses. I'm certain these are not from MS as they keep popping up and blocking the screen

I've also had trouble booting up and accessing parts of the INternet (eg If i do a Google search, it often takes me to a directory rather than the page I seek)

I have taken advice from a previous thread and been told to follow an anti-malware procedure that is issued on this forum. It involves me downloading ATF-Cleaner and superantispyware off the web but it appears that this virus is denying me access to the sites that could provide this

In a "private" correspondence with the administrator of the forum (Wolfeymole) I was advised that I may have to reload XP.

I do not have an XP disc. Apparently I also need to checkif I have a recovery partition on my hard disc - how do I do this. What are the implications of reloading XP? Will I lose all my stuff?

I have been advised by a friend to try Kaplinsky anti virus first which I could buy on a disc. Might it sort things out??

Thanks

A worried man!

Right Chris, seeing as you have XP right click on My Computer and then click Manage.

Then click Disk Management in the Storage tree.

Tell us what it says under C:

Do you have any other drives called D: that are entitled Factory Image at all?

Very well it seems you do not have a recovery partition on your hard drive Chris.

Are there any other drives listed next to C:?

The system also seems to be that infected that none of our anti-malware tools will work so I would recommend a brand new install of XP.

Did you never get an XP disk when you got the pc or have you just misplaced it?

I can't recall - system is several years old.

What would be procedure for installing new XP? Should I get an expert to do it for me? Is it worth running something like Kaplinsky first?

Try running the eset online scan: Free ESET Online Antivirus Scanner as well as the ewido online scan: ewido - anti-spyware and anti-malware solutions

Restart the computer after each scan, then boot into Safe Mode With Networking.

Now try and download Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Restart the computer into Normal Mode then follow the rest of the instructions from the malware removal procedure.

Another option would be to install the hard drive on another computer to disinfect it.

Chris your friend talks of Kaspersky as an antivirus piece of software.

I run, and would run nothing else, ESET's NOD 32 Security Suite.

Seth

Chris says he cannot run any of those tools.

Can you run HijackThis and post the log?

I cannot access any of these tools online - its as if the virus is preventing me getting at them? This is why I wonder whether acquisition of something on disk (such as Kaplinsky) would help? Can the products you suggest (Seth) be obtained on disk?

Not the online scanners, but you can download malwarebytes and superantispyware from another computer, then burn them to a cd or put them on a usb memory stick.

You should also put the updates on disk. For SuperAntiSpyware updates and instructions on how to install.

THanks for this - I will try the suggestionn of downloading the tools on another computer and put it on disk/stick

Meanwhile, computer is functioning (apart from the downloading and site access issues) but had to move the offending windows to the extreme right of the screen - and they are just sitting there.

I'll report how it goes once I've managed to organise it (next couple of days)

If any other ideas come to mind, do let me know!

Thanks

Chris
