Odd problem with domain-attached computers trying to log domain accounts in as local accounts instead

Hey guys, so I've got a bit of a weird problem and I was looking for some explanation as to why this is happening.

I've been assisting a client with an issue where when they attempt to log into their computer by selecting their username from the user history on the login screen, they will be given an "incorrect password/username" notification. It's only when they select "other user" and then manually input their account name and password that the computer will let them log on. It's as if the computer thinks that there is a local version of the account and is trying to use that, even though there isn't and never has been.

I have replicated this issue with the same account on another computer and I have also created a brand new domain account and replicated the issue on the original computer. These are roaming profiles with redirected folders, if that matters.

I noticed that these accounts are creating user folders that are just in the form of "User", rather than "User.DOMAIN"

I have tried:

  • Deleting and recreating the user profile as well as user folders on workstations
  • Leaving and rejoining the domain
  • Checking extraneous user profile entries in the registry
  • Running SFC and DISM
  • Making sure that the profile type is set to "Roaming"
  • Making sure that the settings and permissions for "Username" are the same as other similar accounts
  • Verified DNS settings on workstations

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
