Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Re: Windows 2003 32bit and 64bit and SQL Licensing Hello, You can use cals with no difference due to 32 or 64 bits (as if they were all 32 bits) http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/default.mspx#EYE SQL CAL. Any SQL Server CAL (32-bit, 64-bit, and IA64) can be used with any licensed server running SQL Server regardless of the platform (32-bit, 64-bit, and IA64). -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com "Neil Harding" <NeilHarding@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A0773F20-946E-40CF-85C7-DC4BEDCC284F@microsoft.com... >I have the following:- > > 1 windows 2000 server (used as file server) > 1 windows 2003 64bit Std with SQL 2005 server Std > 1 windows 2003 32bit Std (Domain Controller) > > 20 Windows 2000 Pro clients > 10 Windows XP Pro Clients > > 1 user per PC > > So i know i need 30 SQL CALs, but what do i need to buy to cover the 3 > servers? > do i need > 30 windows 2000 User CALs > 30 2003 64bit User CALs > 30 2003 32bit User CALs > > I so confused with MS licensing.

Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Re: Windows 2003 32bit and 64bit and SQL Licensing I am not a license specialist, but i would say yes. You can still contact Microsoft to get this confirmed -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com "Neil Harding" <NeilHarding@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:9342DD4D-7414-4301-9FA9-7EDE23F04A34@microsoft.com... > So all i need are > 30 Windows 2003 Server Cals and 30 SQL Cals? > > > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > >> Hello, >> >> You can use cals with no difference due to 32 or 64 bits (as if they were >> all 32 bits) >> >> http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/default.mspx#EYE >> >> SQL CAL. Guest Leythos Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Re: Windows 2003 32bit and 64bit and SQL Licensing In article <9342DD4D-7414-4301-9FA9-7EDE23F04A34@microsoft.com>, NeilHarding@discussions.microsoft.com says... > So all i need are > 30 Windows 2003 Server Cals and 30 SQL Cals? You have three servers and you're using server cal's - so you need 1 license per server per client that accesses the server(s) So, 30 clients x 3 servers = 90 cal, 30 per server SQL has two modes, CPU and Client - if you're not purchasing CPU licenses then you need 1 SQL Cal per client that connects, and that doesn't have a thing to do with Windows/Server CALs. -- Leythos - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist" spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 for proper email address)
Guest Neil Harding Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Re: Windows 2003 32bit and 64bit and SQL Licensing I E-mailed microsoft and they came back and told me i only need 30 Windows 2003 Cals? Am i right in thinking if i use Device CALs one device CAL will allow me to connect to all 3 servers? Might be a better way of doing it.
