Upgrade W2k AD to W2k3 AD

Hi,

I am not very well up on AD - I do what I need to do on it, and it

usually works, but if it falls over I usually turn to Google or some

books :).

Anyway, the situation is at the office, I have a 200 user W2k AD

domain with several domain controllers, some of which run DHCP. I

need to upgrade these to W2k3R2, possibly running 64-bit Windows. The

first question is is there any way of saving the DHCP data, so that

when I put the new domain controllers in, I can put DHCP on the

relevant servers, and bring DHCP back to those sites?

The other question, which is the main question, was how we should do

the upgrade. I was originally going to do the upgrade by backing up

all domain controllers, then running the forestprep and domainprep

utilities on a W2k domain controller from the W2k3 install disk,

waiting for the changes to go through the system, then dcpromo the

first machine and take it out the domain, reinstall W2k3 on it, and

dcpromo it back again, ensuring the FSMO roles get transferred

accordingly.

However, my boss is on about having a second domain, then setting up a

trust relationship between the domains, then moving people onto the

new domain, meaning a brand new domain topology, with group policies

etc all refreshed. I am not sure whether this is an option for us,

since the security ID's of the users may all change, and this goes way

beyond my expertise.

What would people recommend doing - or do I need my head examining as

I have gone down the wrong road?

We are using a standard AD, no Exchange, the only addition to the

schema by the looks of it seems to be from a biometric authentication

product which is no longer in use - this will be removed at the time

of upgrade.

Thanks.

Andrew.

Hello,

You can backup dhcp from the console (right click backup), or using netsh:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/Library/df9ecef3-7d85-49e6-a2aa-ff84a5bd3a391033.mspx

dump

netsh dhcp server 192.168.0.1 dump > C:\Dhcp\Dhcpcfg.dmp

Thanks. I checked in the console but didn't see anything - will

terminal services to the server and check again.

Thanks for these - I read the first one, but not the second. However,

I am still curious as to wether it is better to start with a new

domain and transfer the users using the tools on the second support

site - namely the Active Directory users move tool, or whether just to

upgrade the domain?

Thanks.

Andrew.
