Can't Share One Drive Files

When ever I try to share onedrive files either spreadsheet, word , or an audio file, the people I share with say that they can't access it because they don't have onedrv.Is onedrv share so proprietary that people have to have it to share? I don't get this with google drive.Why can't it be shared?
