Guest freddy Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 I had a technician ask me if I had a 1.0 or a 1.1 USB on my old Win 98 PC. It is an Emachines Etower 333 with 3.2 GB hard drive and 32 MB RAM. Anyone know-or if not know how I can find out? It was bought in Spring 1999. The question I forgot to ask him-what difference does it make? I am concerned with transfering my photos, videos and audio to my more modern XP or Vista machines. The 98 has NO CD burner just a floppy (LOL).

Expand the "USB Controllers" section by clicking on the "+" sign to the left of the entry. Click on the entry that refers to the chipset controller NOT the "Root Hub" entry. Click on the properties button and on the "General" tab you should see an entry for "Hardware Version" I assume you wish to transfer files using a USB Flash drive. If so you will need a Win98 driver from the drive manufacturer's web site. OR If you cannot find a Win98SE driver at the ,manufacturer's web site, or want an easier way to deal with it in Win98SE, install the "unofficial" Native USB Mass Storage Driver for Win98SE: http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php Direct Download: http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/drivers/nusb31e.exe Discussion: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43605 From personal experience I can verify that this driver works with both USB versions 1 and 2 on a variety of flash drives. The main difference is speed. (USB 1.0 does 1.5 Mbit/s, 1.1 does 11 Mb, 2.0 does 480 Mb). (BTW, it's not a good idea to try to use USB on a W98 machine. Most USB device drivers need at least W98SE. I'd recommend to put a networkcard in it, (You do have a network, don't you?))
