RP1980 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Evening Guys, Reading a post further down here (about slow shut down of PC), I thought I'd check the startup list on my PC - I was horrified by how much was on it, and it probably goes some way to explaining why my PC takes ages to boot. Could somebody please review my list and let me know what isn't necessary? Thank You! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v63/RedDragon365/Startup.jpg Quote
Seth Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Hi RT. You can uncheck all of that except Jusched and the Symantec/Norton items...don't forget to "Apply". I'd also suggest replacing Norton with NOD32. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. steveie85 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 You can unchecked the Jusched as well. I wouldn't unchecked the Microsoft Intelipoint/Type stuff as well. The Netgear item would be ok to leave and I would personally leave it. Also Seth is right the Nero item should be left checked and the Belkin Bluetooth one is ok as well. Don't forget to run your disk clean up and check for it to clean up all the items, that will also help sometimes in boot. Also running defrag once a month or so will help too. Remember not to run it to often as it can cause issues with your OS down the road. Quote Steve October is Domestic Violence Prevention month. Seth Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Why would you uncheck Jusched? I doubt anyone is going to miss the ipoint and I type. If that Netgear WG...is a wireless utility that you use to connect with, then leave it checked. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Dalo Harkin Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Also running defrag once a month or so will help too This is not recommended for reasons widely covered on this forum! steveie85 Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 The same reason you would uncheck the Itype and Ipoint stuff. Quote Steve October is Domestic Violence Prevention month. AdvancedSetup Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Most of the items are a USER CHOICE item whether they use them often or not or at all. In general as long as it's not a hardware related item than it often does not need to be in the Startup group, or RUN entry in the Registry. What would be better is if you took the time to look at each entry and do some searching on Google to help you determine what each item does and then make an informed decision as to what to do with the item. Then in the long run you'll also learn more about your computer and what makes it tick. . Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. RP1980 Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 Evening Guys, I went through 'Start Up List' thread by Wolfeymole in 'Tech Tips & Tricks' Forum and disabled the ones I didn't think necessary. This seems to have created a problem though, before XP boots I get a question 'Select Operating System' with the option of either 'MS Windows XP Home Edition' or 'MS Windows Recovery Console'. It times out after 3sec so it's not too time consuming but I never had it previously? I changed all my start-up items back to default, thinking this would solve it, but it hasn't. I think I have tracked it down to the BOOT.ini file in msconfig (see below). I think maybe I changed somthing in error when changing my startup items. Do all the settings seem ok? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v63/RedDragon365/startup2.jpg Quote
