RandyL Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Hi daventry; The first thing you need to do is uninstall all but one antivirus program. Running more then one real time AV at a time is bound to cause problems. I would dump AVG for sure. Quote We are all members helping other members. Seth Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Press ctr-alt-del at the same time to start Task Manager. In Task Manager, click on the processes tab and post back with the entries that are using more than 100,000K of memory (if any). Also post back with the details of the "Commit Charge" from the bottom right of that window. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Download and run HijackThis which will show me your startup items as well as other aspects of what's running on your computer: Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and click on Download Hijack This Installer and save it to your desktop. Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis . Click on Install. It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log by copying and pasting in your next reply. Notes: Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted. Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 You're running two antivirus programs and that's a big problem. I suggest you remove Mcafee ASAP and keep Avast. Then go back to msconfig and disable the following: igfxtray.exe igfxpers.exe RtHDVCpl.exe Reader_sl.exe" KHost.exe WMPNSCFG.exe SUPERAntiSpyware.exe PicasaMediaDetector.exe Quote Need help with your computer problems? daventry cat Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 ive had a look at the start up tab on msconfig and the only ones on there are SUPERAntispyware.exe and RthDVCpl.exe so have disabled them should i disable or uninstall Mcafee where will i find the others .......... task manager? Quote
RandyL Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Hi cat; Are you now running just one AV? Since you uninstalled AVG are you still using two? You should only run one AV. Look at Sysinfo for a list of some startup items. One other thing. With Vista Home Premium you should really have 2 GB of RAM instead of 1 GB. Adding RAM in this case might help. Uninstall all but one AV and let us know if it boots or shuts down faster. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. daventry cat Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 (edited) only got avast running now down to about 70-72% memory and it is a little faster was wondering if i needed to get a ram upgrade, would have been nice if it was pointed out during purchase one other thing as an administrator was there a reason why i couldnt access the site late yesterday got page load error no data found thought id done something serious to the laptop Edited October 2, 2008 by daventry cat Quote
Seth Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I too had some problems trying to access the site last night. Anyway, I don't recall ever disagreeing with Randy on a tech issue, but I do disagree that Vista needs 2 Gigs for general computing. For example, my Vista system only has a Pentium 4 with 1 Gig and a crappy video card. I do all sorts of stuff on it other than high end gaming, and it's very fast. Can you give us a list of the msconfig items that are checked? You just need to post the checked items under "Startup Item". Quote Need help with your computer problems? daventry cat Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 adobe acrobat avast delivery manager google desktop intel common user interface x3 java platform se6 u7 microsoft windows operating system microsoft windows operating system(should it be on twice?) toshiba flashcards toshiba power saver toshiba zooming utility windows windows defender and thats it Quote
Seth Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 That's fine if it's on twice. Disable Adobe. I don't know what delivery manager is, but if you don't need it at startup, then disable it as well. Defender has some serious issues and is only a mediocre antimalware program. I might catch some flak, but I suggest you disable Defender and go with Avast, along with Super as an on demand scanner every few days. To disable Defender: Right click on "Computer" and choose Manage>Services. Stop the defender service and change the startup type to disabled then apply. Now go into msconfig and disable it from startup. If the issue persists after all of the above, then please post back with the number of processes. BTW- My Vista system has 28 processes running. Also see if the problem occurs in Safe Mode With Networking (I doubt it will). Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Go back to msconfig's startup tab and disable everything except for the Avira and "Microsoft Window's Operating System" entries. How are things now? daventry cat Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 look icant thank you guys enough for what you are doing. You will see from my initial post that im hardly pro computers and that this is my first odd given i used to run several branches of dixons and trained as a cad/cam engineer 28 yrs ago.But i could never really justify having one but now the kids are older and all that so i took the plunge. And it seemed all my preconcieved ideas where true as the thing was nothing but hassell, constantly scanning wondering why it was so slow. And it does still seem to me that a lot of people probably are unsure exactly whos controlling who in terms of user and machine??? However all this pales into insignificance when your faith in human nature is renewed. I genuinely believed that altruism rarely existed in todays world. However you guys appear tto have turned that notion on its head and for this i heartily thank you And hey if i get no more benifit from this thing than this reassurance of peoples altruism then it may have been worthwhile after all Ramble over Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 We do try Cat :) However you have enough toolbars running to choke a mule and I hate the sodding things so get shut of em. Turn the Vista sidebar off, why have 2 instances of the clock and other widgets running, madness. Adobe is one big fat hog and if I were you I'd consider getting Foxit instead, a far smaller PDF reader. Foxit Software Quote
