How is it that my laptop can turn the airplane mode on for no reason and not allow me to turn it off?

My laptop, Windows 10, occasionally decides to go into airplane mode and stay that way until it chooses not to. The setting for this mode is grayed out and in the on position. What the heck? I have had this problem for the last year and every time I ask for help, the wi-fi is not on to ask.
