LAN files copy fast, local LAN FTP 20x slower?

Can anyone help me here? I have a DLink DNS 323 network storage

server, connected over a local LAN (Linksys WRT54G router).

The server maps to a local drive letter, and I can transfer files like

lightning. However, if I drag the same bunch of files over to the FTP

site that points to this server, it takes around 20 times as long -

about 90 seconds to transfer 48MB (0.5 MB per second).

Are FTP servers inherrently slow? I have checked that there is no band-

width limit on the server setup.

Thanks!
