Total lockup

Hi all am looking for some help me son has brought his pc round for me to look at ...having booted it up it goes to windows loads up the desktop but the screen is completely locked up with several programmes open on screen mouse and keyboard wont work ..have tried to reboot but cant get either the mouse or keyboard to operate to try safe mode i was hoping to reformatt have tried several mice and keyboards old style and usb just cant get anything to operate ..does this sound like a buggered motherboard

Ok - is the keyboard USB? you need a PS2 one when things like this happen - and an adapter will not work.

Then hopefully you can enter safe mode and either restore or diagnose the problem further.

tried both types of connection as i have a couple of pc's in the house nothing works

Are you able to get into the bios (setup)?

 

As soon as you turn on the computer, watch for a message that says "Press (whatever key) to enter setup".

 

If not, pull out the mobo battery for a few minutes.

Seth your the man ..pulled the mobo battery out left it for 10 mins replaced it and the keyboard worked again though the mouse didnt ...i was able to reformat and everything is fine now many thanks...i thought the hardrive or even the mobo was up it cheers many many thanks...impressed with the activity on this site
