Can't Remote Desktop

I can no longer Remote Desktop to my Windows XP Professional. I got the

error message: "This computer can't connect to the Remote computer. Try

connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote

computer or your network administrator". Do you have any suggestions?

Is the host PC you want to remotely access/control with Remote Desktop (RDP)

is a firewall or router? If so, have you forwarded TCP Port 3389 through the

firewall or router to the static LAN IP of the host PC? Can you connect to

the host PC from another PC on the same LAN using the static LAN IP of the

host PC?

 

Is this in a domain environment or a workgroup environment? If its the

latter post to the...

 

microsoft.public.windowsxp.work_remotely

 

....news group. This group is for Terminal Server/Services issues...

Thanks for your prompt response.

 

I am connecting to the Domain. I wanted to Remote Desktop locally within

the same Domain on the same subnet (even on the same switch). I used to be

able to Remote Desktop to this computer. I am not sure what has changed.

OK...

 

Is Remote Desktop enabled on the host/target PC? Is the PC listening on TCP

Port 3389? Do a "netstat -a" command to find out...

Is the Terminal Services service started on the host/target PC?

Can you ping the PC from another local PC?

 

Have you or the network admins recently added any personal software firewall

or similar programs to the PC?

 

I presume your calling the correct LAN IP?

 

I don't do domain stuff so hopefully someone else here can help further...

By the way, how were you able to do a sample screen capture? Do you have a

special software? It is nice to be able to do something like this.

You can capture the whole desktop using the <Print Screen> button on your

keyboard or the active window using the <Alt><Print Screen> key combination

which places the screen shot into the clipboard. You can then use MS Paint,

or any similar program, to manipulate and save the resulting screen shot.

 

I also use a program called "SnagIt" to capture long scrolling windows like

you see with IE for example.
