Guest maz Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 When I start up XP will either start as far as the desktop picture and not all of the programs and then freeze completely or it will get as far as loading everything in and then freeze. If I click on something nothing happens I cannot even get task manager to display. Sometimes it even lets me open an application/program then freezes, restart does not always solve the problem. I have an Acer Aspire SA80 running XP Home, plenty of ram and hard drive space, an NVidia 6200 graphics card, all updates and drivers up to date. The machine has defrag, disk cleanup, Defender scans, anti virus scans (Avast), Comodo firewall, avast anti spyware, Comodo BOClean, scans, all done regularly. All these are completely up to date. I also clean out inside the case to get rid of dust etc. regularly. Anyone got any ideas, I don't really want to do a reinstall, but if I have too so be it.

Select the Application and System categories in the left pane. Look in the right pane for error events such as applications or services that won't load. If you find anything post it here. Tip: double-clicking an event will display the event details dialog box. Mark

And do you recall doing anything in particular right before the problem started?
Guest maz Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Re: XP Freeze Its been going on for about a month now. When I boot up in safe mode I can do just about any thing I want albeit rather slowly. I've done a virus scan and scanned with windows defender in safe mode. Windows Defender is a start, but it's not enough. You need to try more anti-spyware apps. Here are my recommendations: Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html SpywareBlaster (doesn't scan but is a good preventative) http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html The following may be helpful down the road *just in case* the above three miss something: A-Squared http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ CWShredder http://us.trendmicro.com/us/products/personal/CWShredder/ I've also heard good things about SUPERAntiSpyware (although I haven't used it): http://www.superantispyware.com/ Since your Safe Mode bootup is fine, you may benefit from clean boot troubleshooting: "How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434 Finally, make sure you keep your hard drive properly maintained: http://securitytango.com/tango.php or http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

Guest maz Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: XP Freeze I don't remember doing anything different than I normally do. In safe mode it starts up without any problems. I also have Arovax shield and Arovax anti spyware which scans at start up and I can also scan when I want to, these are both up to date. Guest Daave Posted September 14, 2007 Posted September 14, 2007 Re: XP Freeze Assuming you have no malware and since the boot in Safe Mode was fine, I would definitely try clean boot troubleshooting: "How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434 maz wrote: > I don't remember doing anything different than I normally do. > In safe mode it starts up without any problems. > I also have Arovax shield and Arovax anti spyware which scans at > start up and I can also scan when I want to, these are both up to > date.
