Need your advice on this.

Hi all,

I am going to move to windows 2003 terminal server. Currently, we are using

Citrix servers and at most we have only 6 users connected at the same time

even though we have around 400 users. Can I just purchase 25 user CALs and

it will supply our needs? I guess that windows 2003 terminal server can pool

users concurrently as Citrix servers. Any advice on the license and other

known issues. Also, I can just install licensing server on the windows 2003

terminal server.

Thank you.

I'm afraid that your assumption about concurrent license usage is

*not* correct.

TS CAL licenses are either Per Device or Per User, but never

concurrent. So you'll need a TS CAL for every specific client or

user who connects to the Terminal Server. But maybe there's only a

subset of your total user group who ever connects to the TS?

Yes, the TS Licensing Service can be installed on the same server

as the TS, it doesn't have to run on the DC anymore.

Vera,

Thanks for your reply. You mean if I have around 200 users that may use

it occationally even though there are most 6 users that are using at the same

time. Then I need to purchase 200 users license even though some users only

use once ot twice per month or pre year. Right? so, they can not pool users

license as the way as Citrix.

Please advise and you are the true expert.

Thank You.

Re: Need your advice on this.

That is correct. you would need 200 per user licenses. Now if multiple

users share a computer (say differing shifts) then you could get away

with per device licensing and have to buy fewer licenses.

Re: Need your advice on this.

Bottom line is that, unlike Citrix, MS does not have any concurrent

licenses. Period. With 2003, you can choose between per user and per

device. If you have more users than computers/devices, then choose Per

Device. If you have more devices than users, choose Per User.

TS licenses do get returned to the "bank" if unused for a certain amount

of time. If you run out of licenses, a user/device can run for 90 days

with a temporary license. If none are returned in that period of time,

you need to buy more.

Do you know how long unused for a certain amount of time is?

Thanks.

TS CALs expire after a random period of 52 - 89 days.

Re: Need your advice on this.

As Vera notes the period is some random number between 52 and 89 days.

This way, a temp license will be replaced by a permanent license before

it expires if you have enough.

The way it works is the first time a user (or device) logs onto a TS

server, it is issued a temporary license, even if there are permanent

licenses available. The second time the user/device logs on, it is

issued a permanent license, if one is available. If not, it keeps trying

until the 90 days is up.

What this does is prevent the problem created by using up licenses in

one-logon situations.

If a permanent license isn't available in the 90 days, it means you

don't have enough and need to get more.
