Guest SGB Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Hey folks! Any ideas as to why CA Anti-Virus application will not load? Tried removing it to reinstall... haha... yeah, right. Checking here with the know-it-alls (LOL) before I go to the CA website. TIA! P.S. Spybot found absolutehttp.dll during a scan. I removed the spyware. Did removing it have anything to do with CA Anti-Virus? HELPPPPPP!!!!!!
Guest Heirloom Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: CA Anti-Virus Question I just renewed my mother's subscription to CA which involved dl'ding the new version, installing and updating. The process did not involve removing the old version, in fact, it stated that only OTHER brands of AV's should be removed prior to installing.....earlier versions of CA AV's should be left. Note: my mother's machine is XP SP2. Is your subscription up-to-date? Have you tried installing from the Safe Mode, to insure no conflict with another app?? What method did you use to attempt the uninstall? Did you insure no portion of the app was running during the uninstall? Any error messages during the reinstall?? I know, I know, too many questions. If you have your old version, try reinstalling it in the Safe Mode, if successful, you may want to install the new version over it (checking with the CA site to make sure the new version is Me compatible, of course). Keep us posted. Heirloom, old and you might want to consider Avast! or AVG, save some $$$ "SGB" <NoEmail@ThisAddress.com> wrote in message news:OPES2ub9HHA.4712@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > Hey folks! > > Any ideas as to why CA Anti-Virus application will not load? > Tried removing it to reinstall... haha... yeah, right. > Checking here with the know-it-alls (LOL) before I go to the CA website. > > TIA! > > P.S. Guest Heirloom Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: CA Anti-Virus Question Ok, try this: from IE, (or your browser of choice) go to the CA site and download directly from there, saving the file to your Desktop. Then, once again, attempt the 'over' install from the Safe Mode. (this is all assuming that you have been attempting to update from the CA program itself) BTW, what happens when you try to install in the Safe Mode?? When you say 'no other programs were running', you mean you didn't have anything open, right?? I can almost assure you that there were background processes active and a distinct possibility that some facet of CA was running, unless you were in the Safe Mode during the procedure. Background processes will not show in Task Mgr., you would need something like Process Explorer to get a real picture of what is running. Then, we must consider the chance that there are some server problems at CA, hence, the 'loading. please wait' thing. I consider that an 'off' chance, at this point. Guest Mike M Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: CA Anti-Virus Question Hi, OK, that's the version I have on this box and it is updating OK but am running XP. I had a problem similar to yours on another PC and found the reason was because it was an older version and Computer Associates had stopped providing updates/signature for that version. That doesn't appear to be the case here. As a check I've just installed 8.4.0.24 on a virtual machine running Win Me that was running v7.1.8.0 (licence expired at the end of last month) and it has installed without problem and updated to the latest signatures (5134). -- Mike Maltby mike.maltby@gmail.com SGB <NoEmail@ThisAddress.com> wrote: > Hey Mike! :-) > > There you are. Guest Mike M Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: CA Anti-Virus Question Disgusted? Why? 8.4.0.24 installs, updates and is working without problem here on various PCs including one running Win Me. Guest SGB Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: CA Anti-Virus Question Tried to contact CA. I might as well wait to win the lottery. LOL Tried Add/Remove Programs in regular and Safe Mode. Nothing! When trying to use it, application still reads "LOADING. PLEASE WAIT." I might as well wait to win the lottery on that one, too. Could not find any statements on their website, except we don't want any of you using Windows ME to use our products. Just kidding. But, I'm sure it's there someplace. LOL Tried to renew my license early. Will not support Windows ME platform any longer. Tried to do a reinstall in regular and Safe Mode. Nothing! You be a lucky man. However, I have had experience with both AVG and Avast!......both are good. You will find them amongst the top rated freeware AV's.
