Guest Rajiv K Khandelwal Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Just reformatted a stand alone PC and re-installed Windows XP Professional. Then installed SP2. Subsequently 87 critical updates were downloaded but 86 are not being installed. Tried several times. What can be wrong and how to overcome this problem. Thanking you in advance for your response to this issue. Rajiv K. Khandelwal

Guest TaurArian [MS-MVP] Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: Installation of updates on a new PC How to view the Update log in Windows:- Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log and then click OK. Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and paste the error codes into a thread on the WU Newsgroup so someone may be able to assist you. On the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the WU Newsgroup. or On the WU Website, select your history of updates – now click on failed update (red mark) and see if there is an error code. If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do a search for the error code. How to read the Windowsupdate.log file: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093 Windows Update newsgroup: (OE newsreader) http://news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate or (Web) http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&lang=en&cr=US Information: You cannot install updates that you download from the Windows Update Web site on a Windows XP-based computer http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=934648 If Updates fail to install:- If you receive a 643 error message or a message indicating that Windows Update was unable to complete the operation. This may occur if the catalog database (Edb.log) is damaged. Try this:- Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log This command will force the catalog database to rebuild itself.
