Guest pkerr Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 When I start my machine the mouse and keyboard respond (lights on keyboard and I can move the hour glass) as it's booting up but as soon as I get to the window where I am to select which user is to log into the machine they quit responding. If I start up in safe mode everything works fine. I can select the user I want and get my desktop. I check device mgr and everything looks normal. Thanks
Guest Gerry Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: Mouse and Keyboard don't work - sometimes Have you looked at the Warning and Error Reports in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer? Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further information. http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp (Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only) A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. -- Hope this helps. Your challenge is to find out what it is. Here is how you can do it: 1. Disconnect the machine from the Internet. 2. Boot it into Safe Mode. 3. Click Start / Run / msconfig {OK} 4. Click the Startup tab. 5. Untick every box, then click OK. 6. Reboot in Normal Mode. You can now selectively enable the various tasks you disabled in Step 5 until you find the culprit that interferes with your keyboard. Do not reconnect the machine to the net until you have enabled your virus protection and your firewall (if you have one).

An update... I've started up config.sys and have gone to the general tab. I have done "selective startup" It starts fine with everything checked EXCEPT Load system Services. Once I do that then I'm back to the lock up problem.

Guest pkerr Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: Mouse and Keyboard don't work - sometimes Well I got it fixed finally. After messing around with services and startup programs it turned out to be the anti-virus program causing the problem. Once this was disabled and removed from the services things booted up normally. Thanks for all the suggestions "Unknown" wrote: > If no fix, go to: > http://members.internettrash.com/megapolon/winxptweak.html There you will > find all the services with their purposes and recommended settings. Guest Unknown Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Re: Mouse and Keyboard don't work - sometimes If you read these newsgroups often, you will note that about 80% of all the problems are caused by anti-virus programs.
