NTBACKUP - Can't use tape library

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have a backup server running W2003 SP2 and after installing a new

tape library (TS3200) the operating system recognizes it but the Backup

utility can't use the tape. Every time I try using the backup utility it

gives me a message indicating there is no available cartridge in the library,

before this message, it tries to mount all cartridges without success.

Thanks for any help.

Re: NTBACKUP - Can't use tape library

Hello Joe,

Are the tapes new ones or old ones? I have had it, that a new library could

only read older tapes and not write to them, so i had to buy new tapes that

are compatible with the library.

Best regards

Hello Meinolf Weber.

It is a new tape library with its proper LTO3 cartridges. It seems to be ok

with hardware, because using another backup software the tape-library worked

very well.

Thank you.

Re: NTBACKUP - Can't use tape library

By the way, I need to have the tape library working with Windows backup

utility. The other backup software was applied as a test only.

Thanks.

Re: NTBACKUP - Can't use tape library

Hello Meinolf Weber,

The problem was solved doing:

1) Stop the RSM process;

2) Rename the directory c:\windows\system32\NtmsData to OldNtmsData

3) Start the RSM process and wait the tape library finish its inventory.

Don't use any other management software to acess the library. It may put the

library in a loop process when used together with RSM.

However I'm still having problem to restore the data from tape midia:

Restore Status

Operation: Restore

Error: The device reported an error on a request to read data from media.

Error reported: Hardware failure.

There may be a hardware or media problem.

Please check the system event log for relevant failures.

Thank you for help.
