Problems copying C: and D: drives to external hard drive.

I need to copy my C: and D: drive so I can have a partition removed. I purchased an external hard drive today to accomplish this. I received an error message on both drives while copying. I thought the first error message from d: would give more info, but I didn't get a chance to write it down. The C: drive error said Cannot copy pagefile: It is being used by another person or program. There were no other programs running. I don't know now if it stopped copying at this point or what? I searched the files for something called pagefile but no result was found. I googled it and other folks had mentioned the same thing but there were no replies to help with this. Can you please help? You can only copy certain files from the C:/ drive anything that involves the Operating system like the pagefile cannot be copied - so really you just need things like your my documents and music etc and anything saved to desktop etc - programs etc cannot be copied unless they are the exe. files or the whole program.

copy over what is listed above and then when you reformat the drive, and reinstall the OS - you can load it all back on again :)
