Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I'm running a Windows 2000 Server (DC) and a Windows 2003 Server that I

installed 3 months ago and have just installed the terminal server on it 3

days ago, means we've never loged into this Terminal Server remotely.

However, when we try to connect (local administrator / domain administrator

/ simple user ) we get the following error :

"To log on to this remote computer, you must have Terminal Server User

Access permissions on this computer. By default, members of the Remote

Desktop Users group have these permissions. If you are no a member of the

Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has these permissions, or

if the Remote Desktop User group does not have these permissions, you must

be granted these permissions manually."

Any ideas ???

Many thanks in advance

Have you checked membership of the local Remote Desktop Users

group? And it's permissions?

Is Remote Desktop enabled?

The 2003 server is a member server in the domain, right?

RE: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Lavida,

go into terminal services configuration (TSCC.msc) and select properties on

rdp-tcp, select the permissions tab and ensure the approperate user(s) are

setup, if not set them up accordingly.

Also check you policies surrounding the user(s) and machine, the "allow

logon through terminal services" policy in the user rights assignment

(computer configuration / Security Setings / Local Policies / User Rights

Assignment)

hope this helps

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Hi Lavida,

Did you install TS Licensing on your 2003 server, activate it, and

then install your purchased TS CALs? If not then please go ahead

and do this and either restart your server or wait a little while for it

to realize that an activated ts licensing server is available. Make

sure that the TS licensing mode in Terminal Services Configuration

matches your TS CAL type.

Check your System event log using Event Viewer for events with

id of 1010 or 1008 with source of TermService.

Thanks.

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Many thanks guys for these prompt replies.

Vera :

I've added all the appropriate users with the convenient permissions to the

local "Remote Desktop Users" group, I've also checked that "Remote Desktop"

is enabled, as for the server being a "member server", I'm not sure how to

make sure it is??.

Mark :

I've already done all what you advised, but in vain.

TP :

My TS CALs are installed and activated on the W2k server DC, actually we do

access several server using thos licenses with no problem, the only problem

I have is with this W2k3 server.

This is driving me crazy.

Many thanks again.

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Hi Lavida,

You are welcome.

2003 TS *requires* a 2003 TS Licensing server, that is why

I asked if you had installed TS Licensing on your 2003 server.

Also you need 2003 TS CALs.

Thanks.

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Good catch, TP!

One would wish a better error message in this situation than the

message about Remote Desktop User group membership and rights.

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Many thanks for this precious information, I didn't know there's 2000 CALs

and 2003 CALs.

I checked my TS CALS, they are 2003, but they're installed on 2000 server,

Do I really need to install them on a 2003 server??? If yes, how could I

desinstall them from the 2000 server and install them on the 2003 server??

Appreciate your help.

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Yes, really.

In order to install them you need to contact the clearinghouse

and have them reissue your licenses. Explain to them you

installed your CALs on a 2000 machine by mistake. There is

no deinstallation procedure so don't worry about your 2000

TS Licensing server.

After you have your 2003 TS Licensing server up and running

with the TS CALs installed, verify that your TS detects it

properly using Terminal Services Configuration and examining

the event log for errors. As I mentioned before, you can wait

for your TS to realize that the TS Licensing server is now available

or you could restart your TS server.

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

I forget to ask about something, what about my Win2k Servers? Can I connect

to them using these licenses installed on the Win2k3 serveer??

Thanks

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Yes, a 2003 TS Licensing server can serve Win2k TS Servers

as well as 2003. You could consolidate and only run your

2003 TS Licensing server if you like. The same rule applies to

your Win2k TS servers--after you make the changes make sure

that they can find the new licensing server okay by checking

their event log (restart them first).

If the Windows 2000 Server TS servers have problems finding

your 2003 TS Licensing server then follow the instructions here:

Re: Can't connect to a Win 2k3 terminal server

Problem solved.

We've moved the TS CALs to the 2003 server, so it worked.

Thank you very much guys for your time and assistance.
