change from remote desktop for administration to per device

Could someone explain how i can do this? I have a windows 2003 enterprise

license server. In TS configuration/Server settings my only available option

is Remote desktop for administration and i need to change to per device to be

in sync with our terminal servers. It says to use Add/Remove but am unsure of

which componets i am to add/remove. This server presently has over 300

temporary licenses issued and users are now receiving warnings that their

client license is about to expire in x amout of days. This would also ideally

be done during production hours.

You go to add/remove programs, windows components, terminal services.

This will put your into application mode. Although if your handing out

300 temp licenses it sounds like you have a server already in

application mode and you need to buy terminal services CAL's.

Hey Jeff,

Looks like this server has the terminal server licensing componet installed

on it. It has 359 temporary licenses issued and in the TSlicensing snap in i

select the server in question and i have 3 items .

Type Total Avail Issued

Windows 2000 Server - T S CAL Token (per-device) Volume license 500 500

0

Temp licenses fow Windows Server 2003 TS PerDevice Temp - - 349

Existing Win 2000 Server-TS CAL Token (per device) Built-in Unlim

Unlim 0

All of our Terminal servers are configured as per device and we only want to

use one license server (a windows server 2003 that is already exisiting and

assigning licenses). So i'm wondering what i would need to do to migrate to

the exisiting license server and get this one offline. Keeping in mind this

is a DC and am also concerned about the exisiting clients with temporary

licenses.

Not only does it have the TS Licensing Services installed, it also

holds 500 W2K TS CALs. But since none of these licenses have been

issued, you probably don't have any W2K Terminal Servers in the

domain anymore? If that is the case, then all you would need to do

is to make sure that all Terminal Server connect to the correct TS

Licensing Server in your domain as their preferred LS.

Easiest done with a GPO, but you can also do it on each server, in

Terminal Server Configuration.

You can make this configuration change while the servers are in

production. You don't need to and cannot migrate temporary

licenses. They are stored locally on each client, so changing the

preferred Licensing Server doesn't affect your clients.

I hope that your main TS Licensing Server has a lot of free 2003 TS

CALs available :-)

thanks Vera,

my concern was that i have changed the GPO to point our TS's to our single

license server, I deleted the key MSlicensing on my workstation, restarted,

and TS'd into one of our terminal servers and when i checked the license snap

in on the license server i saw that i still had a temporary license issued by

the............I think i just answered my own question. I'd need to restart

or run gpupdate on the terminal server before i got a valid license :-)

forgot to ask,

could i uninstall the windows componet "Terminal Server Licensing" without

concern of the temporary clients unable to TS into our enviroment? This just

to elimante any future mishaps.
