not able to set up wireless

Hello folks, I wonder if you can help me. Totally new to this wireless thing, so we'll need to keep it quite simple.

 

I've just bought a second hand Toshiba Sattelite SA50-110. I've installed XP Pro on it. I have a wireless router thing attached to a NTL broadband modem.

 

The lap top has an internal wireless receiver, it says its a 1394 net adapter. It looks like the driver is installed. The 1394 status is 'Enabled' and the status says 'Connected'. All the TCP IP stuff is set to automatic.

 

In explorer it won't call up any web page (cannot be displated), as if there is no connection. I've now been going round in circles for over 6 hours, and I'm about to throw it out of the window.

 

I must have missed something out in setting this up. Any ideas what? Please remember that my knowledge is at a fairly low level!! Thank you. Ian

1394 is your Firewire port/s, it has Nothing to do with any networking capabilities wired or wireless.

 

What else is listed in the Network Connections?

What is listed in Device Manager under Network Adapters?

I've gone in to 'view network connections', and under 'LAN or High-Speed Internet' is just that 1394 connection, nothing else.

Right-click MY COMPUTER and choose PROPERTIES. Then select the HARDWARE or DEVICE MANAGER. There should be a listing of devices that are installed. Open NETWORK can see if what network adapters are listed. If your wireless card isn't listed, then it has failed.

 

Does this machine connect if using a wired Ethernet connection?

I've looked under network adapter, and it lists 1394 Net Adapter.

 

It will not connect with ethernet either, but looking at the list of 'other devices', the ethernet controller has a '?!' next to it.

 

The only way it will connect to the internet is by using a usb link to the broadband modem

Go here Ian and get the Ethernet Controller driver for that machine.

There's nothing on the Toshiba web site that relates to this lap top as far as I can tell. The lap top says its model: PSA50E So I assume that means its a 'P' series (?)

But then there is nothing on the 'short model number' that says SA50

Are there any other serial numbers or methods of identification on the laptop Ian?

Well, on the underside, on the silver sticker, I've got TOSHIBA SA50-110

Is it a normal Sattelite or a Pro?

It just says 'Satellite' next to the keyboard.

Unfortunately things have gone from bad to worse. I've searched for Ethernet drivers for this model of lap top and not found any.

 

Now, in the process of desperately trying anything, I've made it worse in that it will not connect to the internet at all any more (not through usb port as before). If I click on 'repair' it says something about not being able to query TCP IP information.

 

Any suggesions please?

Have you browsed through the BIOS settings to see if something there may be turned off or any other clues?

Ive just had a look at the bios settings, and there doesn't seem to be anything that might relate to things like network cards, ethernet, wireless, etc.

 

The only thing I did see was a 'Network Boot Protocol' which is set to PXE. I have the option to change it to RPL ??

 

I'm not sure if this helps, but on the Toshiba site it refers to their wireless card as a 4965AGN
