Guest Robert Smith Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 I wnated to upgrade my event photography workstation and server from XP to server 2003 to get increased speed. After loading 2003 I can see my C drive and its partition but my second SATA does not show up even though I can see it in the devices folder. The second Sata is formated and has files already on it. The motherboard is a Asus motherboard.
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Re: Server 2003 does not see second Sata drive Hello, if there is already a partitition and data on it, you would go to the disk management: start /run / diskmgmt.msc it will ask you to sign the disk, say yes it may ask about converting to dynamic, you wouldn't Then assign a drive letter from the console (right click, assign letter) -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com "Robert Smith" <Robert Smith@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8CD389FF-9110-4371-87DF-6D9FDF9344BD@microsoft.com... >I wnated to upgrade my event photography workstation and server from XP to > server 2003 to get increased speed. After loading 2003 I can see my C drive > and its partition but my second SATA does not show up even though I can > see > it in the devices folder. I'm not sure why you think you're going to get increased speed running W2003, especially if you're using the same hardware. If you use W2003 enterprise, you can put in more RAM, true, but this seems an odd choice for a small office - and note that many of your applications and drivers may not work with a server OS. Do you see your SATA drive in control panel | admin tools | computer management | disk management?
Guest Robert Smith Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Re: Server 2003 does not see second Sata drive When I work at an event I have to import perhaps 200 2.5 meg images at a time , there has to be 3 copies made, rotated renamed . While this is going on I have 4 viewing stations accessing one of the folders created by the importing software. This is why the program makers tell me to use the server software so I can use 4 gigs of RAM. The only drivers I use are Kodak printer drivers As you can appreciate with 10 mothers champing at the bit to get photographs of their little darlings and willing to tear me limb from limb , speed is essential
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Re: Server 2003 does not see second Sata drive Hello, are you speaking about the file server's cache ? the maximum amount of ram it can actively use on 32 bits is 960M. Then it has a standby list, where it keeps others file in cache, which can fill up the memory. So with 4G of ram, you may get the maximum efficiency on the ram. May, because cache means accessing more than once a file while the file is in cache On the other part, Sata disks are not the best on seek time and throughput. You would exclude folders from the antivirus to keep performance up. Having a raid would help. =>If you write more than you read, a raid 1 =>if you read more than you write,a raid 5 Just my 2 cents -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com "Robert Smith" <RobertSmith@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3B56DCC2-078E-43A4-8BEE-D01682C7D9D4@microsoft.com... > When I work at an event I have to import perhaps 200 2.5 meg images at a > time > , there has to be 3 copies made, rotated renamed . I thought 32-bit XP could handle 4GB just fine. > > The only drivers I use are Kodak printer drivers As you can > appreciate with 10 mothers champing at the bit to get photographs of > their little darlings and willing to tear me limb from limb , speed > is essential Sure. As the other reply says, your drive speed could be an issue here, too, remember.
