chris lovett Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Hi all, Recently we have shut off one of our servers and this is resulted in 5 of our users losing connection to the internet. Obviously this is not a good thing and we are confused on how to fix it. They used to go trhrough a proxy server which is why when shutting down the server they lost connection to the internet. We have check there IP/DnS etc setting and they all seem to match up. We are running windows server 2003 and any input would be much appreciated. Thanks all Quote If Computers always worked i would be out of a job. This is why i love to hate computers. :)

Guest Wolfeymole Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Why were they going through a proxy in the first place, do they not wish to be identified? Why could not they log on as normal? Quote
chris lovett Posted October 14, 2008 Author Posted October 14, 2008 We Don't understand why there internet wasn't working. Which is why we added them to the proxy only as a temporary measure while we figured out why. But we had a couple new starters join us which meant we left this problem and now it's been left to long and forgotten about until the server was removed. But now that we have removed the server they no longer have access to the internet. Quote If Computers always worked i would be out of a job. This is why i love to hate computers. :)
Guest Wolfeymole Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 What is the ip address that they are trying to access? Quote
chris lovett Posted October 14, 2008 Author Posted October 14, 2008 IP Adress = Varys on computer as part of a network Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway= 10.0.0.3 Preffered DNS = 10.0.0.9 (Only DNS aswell) I hope this is what you wanted Quote If Computers always worked i would be out of a job. mike Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Have you tried pinging a given website via the command prompt? I would execute the following two commands; ping Google ping 64.233.183.147 Doing so will help eliminate the possibility of the DNS server having a fault. Also, can you verify that the address / network config you gave in your last post is correct. Ie, is the same on the computers that actually work in the network? Quote Need computer support? Tootech Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Hi Chris, Can you ping the gateway 10.0.0.3 ? Do all your PC's point to the same gateway? Do all your PC's use the same security package - I'm thinking about the firewall really and open/closed ports. Tootech. Quote
chris lovett Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 (edited) 10.0.0.3 Btw Thanks everyone for your help so far All of our computers are using symanted antivirus as the security package. All of the computers also all point to the same 10.0.0.3. None of the computers are behind there own firewall as we are protected by the firewall on the server. And do you want the ports open on the server or the individual desktops? Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Tootech Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Chris, Thanks for the info - you have DNS, you have a default gateway, and you do have internet access on most PC's. No third party firewalls, and you can ping the gateway which I guess means all of the TCP/IP settings are correct. The five PC's that are not connected - what happens if a different user logs on. someone that is connected on a another PC, or an Admin - can they get on the Internet? Also, the 5 that cannot get internet access, are they sequential IP addresses? Just wondering if it is a 'user' issue ie users need granting Internet access or an IP range issue. Tootech Quote
chris lovett Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 All that info is correct. If the users currently using those 5 machines connect somewhere else they are able to connect to the internet no problem. Also if an admin (Me) connects to the internet on there machines we still cannot go on the internet so it is the desktop it's self. And the IP's are of a varied range. I have also attempted to update the drivers for the network card in there computers today but this returned no results. (not that i expected it to, as they can connect to network and printers etc just cancelling out options) Quote If Computers always worked i would be out of a job.
