Good morning

This probably be 2 seperate threads but these are the issues.

1 I was doing some basic research using google and got redirected to one of those sites that just don't want to go away. My immediate reaction was to switch off my network connection physically and I did. I then deleted all temporary internet files. Was this the best way to handle this type of issue as I do not need any further problems.

2 After the deletion of the files I received a notice that seemed to be internal telling me my cache settings were to high and it was being reduced to 1024. My snderstaning is that microsoft actually recommends much lower setting. Can someone either expalin what that all means and what the effect is or perhaps direct me and article or thread that will dummy it down for me.

Thanks

Hello again Barry. I will try my best to answer your queries.

1. The method you adopted was most thorough however it is not practical. In future, if you ever have to clear your temporary internet files and cache, then follow the instructions in this article and you should do fine. I personally use CCleaner to clear my internet traces, browsing history and other private data, besides using the inbuilt provision in Mozilla Firefox, as I don't trust Microsoft's inbuilt Disk Cleanup utility.

2. The Internet Cache, as you might understand, is used to store a cache of the web pages you visit on your hard drive for quicker loading times. It is recommended you often clear it if you are paranoid about your privacy. As far as I understand, the value alloted to internet cache is measured in terms of MB and setting anything higher than 1024 MB (1 GB) at most seems a ridiculous figure to me. You can be assured that unless you browse the web very extensively, you won't be using even 75% of your alloted cache space. Thus Microsoft has considered the average user's need and allows up to 1 GB to be reserved for cache.

Hope that helps. :)

Hi Goku many thanks again. I think I understand the cache now.

I did clear the temp internet files. When I say physically all I meant was that I hit the switch that disabled my wireless. Since I am not connected via an ethernet or LAN and the site I was directed to would not close down so I just figured that if I shut down the wireless and lose my connection I could stop anything from continuing to get in. I just waited a little bit and reconnected. It seemed like the fastest thing to do.

OK, hope I don't have to do either very often. But I do wonder what would cause a simple google search about supermarkets in the US to direct me to a site like that. If we can't trust Google who can we trust? Except you guys of course. !!!

I agree with Wolfey. Google has been infiltrated in the past and some Malware have undoubtedly managed to get themselves on the top of its results for specific keywords.

I will do but am becoming a bit paranoid perhaps. I can assure you that I have taken everything to heart and there is no p2p software or programs at all and no poker site. For the last few days I have been reviewing different threads looking for new issues and trying to learn from others. I just hope that I am not becoming one of these people who read medical journals to find disease that fits. Everything seems to be fine and have continued using google to search because I need the information for business. That is the reason for the red face icon. I think I may be becoming a laptopcondriac!!

Well, No malware, No Virus, No warnings and no actual problem so unless you think otherwise I will just assume that google was fooled and if it was anyhting I cought it in time. Is the paid ESET AV Software significantly better than Avira?

In a word Barry YES

We are not in collusion with the software sites that we mention in the security products mate, we gain no financial reward for promoting these sites.

I myself run Nod 32's Security Suite on a yearly subscription and have had no problems whatsoever.

OK then I will give it a try. I have no problem paying for something that works. It is just that everything claims to work. By the way I never considered for a moment that you were anything other than straight up or I would not have asked. ;)

Besides Avira I now have both the Malwarebytes and SUPERspyware installed. Is there any need to go further.

Barry allow me to offer an analogy.

Consider you live in a fortified castle with good thick walls, you feel safe but every day the barbarians are constantly trying to attack the castle and invade your defences.

You need men to rebuild broken walls, replace Archers etc on a constant basis.

As long as you are on the Internet you are getting attacked and you need the tools to defend yourself.

This may be a frightening scenario but we deal with these issues every day because people have not fully protected themselves via either ignorance or simply not being bothered about protection.

These are the stark realities mate.

So you've been to Ireland.

The truth is that this thing has been good to me for years until some idiot (or eejit over here) suggested a way of getting TV programs that I missed. Just plain old free TV shows. Actually I'm the eejit for doing it. (figured I'd say that before you did.)

That worked well for me for weeks (about 20 tv shows) until I ran into one malicious SOB that uploaded a really vicious bug that I should have caught. To me that means that the odds favour that I will run into a similar problem once for every 20 downloaded. Not very good odds. So anytime you run into someone who thinks torrents are a good thing please feel free to refer them to me.

I did find a great way to get these shows though. I have my daughter Tivo them for me. I'll watch them over there.

You have been really great Bob and that goes for all of you. I am not easy and always know better. That being said, I am not a rich man but will be making a donation. ( I have money transfered over here every few weeks to cover my bills over here but I will not forget.)

Here is one last analogy

Have you seen the film Trainspotting?

If not let me explain that there is a scene where an American tourist goes into an Edinburgh pub for a pee and gets robbed in the toilet.

This is nothing derogatory aimed at Scottish people but the point is that the tourist went into somewhere he had never been before (analogy = an obscure internet site).

Do not go to obscure sites and if you do be prepared for what the outcome may be.

Here endeth the lesson. :)

Since this seems to have nothing whatsover to do with a browser cache anymore and my problems seem to be resolved. I will just end this thread myself with a "lesson learned" and hopefully just use this site to browse and see what else I can learn. If you see me around say hello. :D

Warmest regards

Barry
