Dalo Harkin Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Seagate is getting ready to finally release an SSD product but not before next year. Apparently the company will initially aim at the enterprise market specifically, with the drives designed for use in servers. Seagate is a latecomer in the SSD world, falling behind numerous companies, including Intel. Part of their delay was voiced by their CEO, Bill Watkins, who outright attacked SSD's as they exist today and claimed they were a minor part of the storage market. Seagate's decision to both attack and embrace the SSD market has been an interesting one to watch. Dalo Harkin Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 I cannot see SSD's really taking over the market - I do see the benefit in having them in laptops, but as we said a while ago they are outrageously expensive! Seth Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 Cell phones were $2000 when they first came out. I have no doubt that ssd's will replace hard drives, just like they're replacing cd's. Dalo Harkin Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 I don't believe that they will - maybe in the laptop market, but for mainstream and enterprise use I dont think that we will see this change for at least 5-10 years if at all. They are not fast enough to even compete in the Business market. Seth Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 They are not fast enough to even compete in the Business market. Hmmm. To the best of my knowledge, ssd's already have a faster transfer rate than a typical hard drive. If not, it's only a matter of time and development. In theory, an ssd should have transfer rates that far exceed a hard drive. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Dalo Harkin Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 SSD's are slower in Writing but faster in reading. Seth Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 I'll check that out Dalo, but I can't even see how that could be possible. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Click here
Dalo Harkin Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 This one doesnt have a write speed test - but is worth seeing just for some of the benefits YouTube - Samsung SSD vs HDD and the vibration one makes me laugh :D Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Seth Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 Wow, that was a significant speed increase, and it's only going to get better. Other benefits are weight, power consumption, and the fact that hard drives have a relatively low life span. I also like the fact that an ssd won't cause errors and/or file corruption due to vibrations. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Dalo Harkin Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 Try to find a write test comparison, I agree that they have potential, but I do feel that the cost out weighs the benefits. Guest Saxon Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 SSD's in laptops are going to become more an more common for obvious reasons this year alone I have destroyed 3 laptop hard drives by dropping them thankfully I copy all my data over to my server an only keep in use copies on the laptop along with my music etc. SSD's in a server room might be a little ways of as a standard yet but I look forward to seeing them more often, I have a few ideas I want to try out when it comes to SSD's an data security IE destroying the media form further use, it would have to fit into the enterprise worlds standards an I think i have a idea. At the moment i am junking old drives with boot an nuke, a dril and a large hammer (one of my old clients is a doctor an the other is a accountant so there data is sensitive), an that is the only way i can be 100% cetain that the data is gone.
