Guest joytym Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 This message comes up under the heading of Local Area Connection. It will appear intermittantly during the use of the computer on the internet. This will lead to Program Not Responding messages and the lock-up of the computer. the only resolution is to Shut Down the computer at the Tower. When it is turned on again the internet connection is just fine again until sometimes soon, sometimes quite a while the whole process repeats. I have checked the physical connections repeatedly, finding all secure. The computer is running Windows XP Home, Microsoft updates are installed automatically, SP2 included. Suggestions ?? Thank You Tom.

Maybe one of the devices is overheating, or just failing.. -- Joe =o)

Not much help, but I can tell you that the "cable unplugged" is a serious misnomer. It really means that for some reason one of the ports is unable to receive or transmit data. It's like Program Not Responding, which actually means the program isn't AVAILABLE to take any response at this time, and often (not necessarily in this case) if you just wait, the program finishes what it's doing, and that message "magically" goes away. I think you'll have to provide more info on your setup to get much targetted help for this. Pop`

What does system (event) log report? What does device manager report when NIC is working and when it is not? What are the indicator lights reporting on NIC connection and on router both before and when network connection is lost? What happens when you ping to the router repeatedly (ping -t xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx is the IP address of the router or anything after the router)? What happens when NIC hardware diagnostics execute (the complictaions created by Windows removed)? Answers to these questions begin the process of breaking a problem down into parts and learning which parts do or do not work properly. Or information posted so that replies can put forth useful replies.
