Guest Rick J. Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 I’m trying to upgrade a Gateway computer with Win98SE to WinXP Home. The upgrade will only run a short time and I get a blue screen error that the program can not read the CD. I have tried the upgrade several times with the same result. The error message states that the CD may be dirty but it’s new and clean. I know that the CD-ROM functions correctly in Win98. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rick J.

The laser could be out of alignment slightly, perhaps some part of it cannot read the entirity of the CD at some point. The simplest test is to replace the CD drive with another (newer) drive and try the install again. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Guest Curt Christianson Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 Re: WinXP upgrade problem Rick, In addition to Shenan's advice, you might try a cleaning CD. They can be found in most discount stores in the music section, or any computer store. -- HTH, Curt Windows Support Center http://www.aumha.org Practically Nerded,... http://dundats.mvps.org/Index.htm "Rick J." <RickJ@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:9907D569-747B-4C51-B8A9-9BD3B2B08154@microsoft.com... | I'm trying to upgrade a Gateway computer with Win98SE to WinXP Home. | The upgrade will only run a short time and I get a blue screen error that | the program can not read the CD. Guest Rick J. Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Re: WinXP upgrade problem Changed the drive to a "different" one and the upgrade worked without a problem. Thanks for the help, Rick J.
