WinXP upgrade problem

Recommended Posts

Posted

I’m trying to upgrade a Gateway computer with Win98SE to WinXP Home.

The upgrade will only run a short time and I get a blue screen error that

the program can not read the CD. I have tried the upgrade several times with

the same result.

The error message states that the CD may be dirty but it’s new and clean. I

know that the CD-ROM functions correctly in Win98.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick J.

Just because it 'seems' to function correctly in Windows 98 does not mean

that nothing is wrong. The laser could be out of alignment slightly,

perhaps some part of it cannot read the entirity of the CD at some point.

The simplest test is to replace the CD drive with another (newer) drive and

try the install again.

Rick,

In addition to Shenan's advice, you might try a cleaning CD. They can be

found in most discount stores in the music section, or any computer store.

Re: WinXP upgrade problem

Changed the drive to a "different" one and the upgrade worked without a

problem.

Thanks for the help,

Rick J.
