10GB suddenly regained

I had between 4 and 5GB free left on my hard drive those last few months.

Suddenly I have now 10GB free without having cleaned anything or without any

Windows or other major update. How could this happen?

Unlike water, data does not evaporate so something or someone has apparently

deleted data.

Of course, this is why I am puzzled. I carry my laptop everywhere with me

and nobody else ever uses it, all my files seem to be there, the OS seems to

be running as usual.

10GB is a lot, I am really anxious about what has happened.

Yes I use Outlook Express for Newsgroups and Outlook 2003 for mail,

calendar etc... but still 10GB seems to me an awful lot

Hi,

Did you run Disk Clean-up with the System Restore option?

And were any applications uninstalled?

And is Zone Alarm installed on the system?

Re: 10GB suddenly regained

Why would ZA have anything to do with this?

Re: 10GB suddenly regained

I remember that I deleted Zone Alarm from my PC because it generated

huge amounts of LOGs (several Gigabytes), in a Windows subdirectory, I

don't remember the name now, and it failed to automatically delete

them after a period of days.

Re: 10GB suddenly regained

Hi,

Zone Alarm version 6.5 has a bug that creates very large .rdb files within

the system. These .rdb files are monitored by System Restore and thus end up

in the restore points located in the System Volume Information folder, along

with other locations on the system. The best advise is to revert to an

earlier, or newer version of Zone Alarm. Then disable System Restore which

will purge all existing restore points, then turn it back on. For more

information on this subject please visit the Zone Labs User Forum.
