I activated yesterday and was greeted as having completed this. Now, this

morning, I was told that "This pre-release version will expire in three

days". I rummaged around a bit and clicked on something and the activation

gave me the O.K. again.

Now, a few hours later, the message is back saying it will expire in three

days. Is this a known issue that can be ignored?

It sounds like you may have the Win 7 Beta instead of the Win 7 RC.

Ha, I shouldn't wonder, but I hope not, it took me 17hours to have it

trickle down the wireless!!!

It is Build 7000

Yes, that is the beta, NOT the RC. You need the RC, because that beta

version will definitely expire on July1.

Time to fire up the wireless again, Tony. You've got just about enough time.

You might try here, though I'm sure there are other download sites:

Yeah - that is the upside of it. But I was downloading so much in those days

I may have both and just burned the wrong one?

You should be burning

7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culxfrer_en_dvd.iso

It will be available for download until August 15. Keys will still be

obtainable after then.

Yes, that is what happened. Got the 7100 burned and labeled now.

Fortunately, I do have it all in fresh memory, but it's a long time since I

was so disappointed. Now, the bigger issue may be that I actually used the

RC Key to activate the Beta - what to do about that?

Beta and RC keys are valid for several hardware activations. Officially

I believe it is 3 activations. In practice I think it is much more and

you can register for another key if you want or need one.

Your key is valid for multiple activations of both the Beta and/or RC.

If I remember correctly Microsoft said unlimited activations.

Hi, Tony.

As they said, you need Win7 RC, Build 7100.

I just noticed that the System Properties screen now says simply "Windows 7

Ultimate" and the 2009 Copyright line. No mention of beta or Release

Candidate or anything like that.

Winver says "Version 6.1 (Build 7100)", and includes the line:

"Evaluation copy. Expires 3/1/2010 6:59 PM"

(I suppose that expiration time will vary with your time zone.)

And the "watermark" in the lower right corner says:

Windows 7

Evaluation copy. Build 7100

Sorry you have to install it again, but I think you'll like this RC (no

relation ) much better than the beta build 7000. ; Ha, I shouldn't wonder, but I hope not, it took me 17hours to have it

It is strange - yesterday was so rewarding, and then - (Wham!)

No, it's my own careful design, you might say, and I expect much less

trouble and a really clean installation. It's just far too hot right now,

but I'll fix it. Somewhere deep inside (very deep) I am already feeling

nearly good about it.

Tony,

If you don't want to lose all that time that took you to configure and

install things the way you like, you can always launch 7100 installation as

an upgrade.

Boot 7000, insert the 7100 DVD, and choose upgrade.

Thanks, yes I did think about that - there isn't much risk in trying since I

can always go back and do it right later if I think so. On the other hand

there it would be a benefit not losing a few days hard work.

Or you can use this opportunity to run Windows Easy Transfer (WET). It

doesn't take all that long (no longer than an in place upgrade which is a

good deal slower than a fresh install). And you'll have a "clean" system

when you're done. Just make sure you run WET from the 7100 DVD, not the beta

version. They made changes in the structure of things (and what is saved)

since the beta, and it can cause restore failures if you're saving with one

version and trying to restore with a different one.

Charlie,

I only recommended the "on top" (i.e.: upgrade) thing because this is still

RC and in a few months Tony will be surely installing a fresh RTM copy as

soon as he falls in love with Windows 7.

Otherwise, fresh is always better than on top.

True, only you need two machines, don't you? And a way to connect between

them - or where do you store it all in between? These are hard times and I

do not have the room any longer to manage several PC's at once. On top of

that it isn't really a lot of work, most things I could just Zip and

transfer myself, the hard work consisted mostly of doing the preparations

which may not be so overwhelming with the newer version anyway?

I don't know Charlie, it's an opportunity, but I confess I am tempted to

have a go at just slipping it in for now - and then, the RC2 should be

almost round the corner, when I'll be forced to decide again.

But I am of two minds, or more.

Supposedly the RC will not upgrade the Beta unless you change a value in

cversion.ini which means you have to extract the files from DVD and then

rebuild a bootable DVD for the installation.

http://www.blogsdna.com/3083/how-to-upgrad...-build-7100.htm

http://www.zimbio.com/Windows+7/articles/2...7000+Build+7100

Or, if you extract the files and edit the cversion.ini you can put the

files on a USB stick and load from there.

Hi Tony,

No you can install WET on the old machine, run it create a file, save

the file to cd, dvd, or a USB storage device then build you new machine

and import from the file.

You can store it on the same machine if you've got more than one drive

letter on it. You have to tell it you have a network drive, but then point

to the drive letter of the local one.

The thing with WET is it saves all your IE, Outlook, etc settings, along

with lots of other settings. And the new version of WET includes a nice

"live" report you can run on the new machine to see what has been

re-installed, and what still needs to be done. This makes it easy to get

back to full speed.

If you've configured your PC the way I do, with all your "documents" and

"music" and "pictures" and "video" locations pointing to a separate

partition (instead of all being on C:), then it's even easier. You don't

have to save your documents or anything, since they're all on a partition

that won't be updated. Now, you install the RC, point your user folders back

over to the D: drive or wherever you have them, and run WET. It restores

your settings and you can now install your software.

Or lie to it and tell it you're saving to a network location, and then save

Tony,

There will be no RC2. You have obviously been "unplugged" for a long time.

style_emoticons//smile.gif

RC will jump directly to final which "is almost around the corner".
