Bobby,

Not quite sure, but I am 99% confident that I installed 7100 on top of 7000

in my notebook without the need of any tweaks.

I never tried to upgrade from Beta to RC but thought it might be

something to be aware of if Tony ran in to any problems.

After seeing the one on using a USB stick I have followed that and do

all my installs from USB since it is a bit faster than reading from a DVD.

Bobby,

Also, if you have a running OS, copying the disc files to an available

partition on you hard disk(s) and running the install from there is much

faster.

That's what I did in my notebook.

But if I do the USB thing I only have to copy the files once to the USB

stick and then use it multiple times for installations. It was for my

netbook initially but decided to use it for all my installtions.

Actually, this is what I will attempt to do - listening to everybody and

seeing there is only about 36 - 40 hours left now, I'd like to have some

elbowroom if I 'botch' this. I have other things on my mind as well, like

keeping the place tidy and finding a job, while also puffing and panting in

the heat. I believe you Charlie, but I feel unprepared and think I'd better

push the WET bit off for the RTM install job.

Thanks to all! - (Into the b-b-breach boys!!!)

Perfectly reasonable, Tony. But do plan on the WET and a clean install for

RTM, since you'll want to keep that one as clean as you can.

Oh, absolutely, Charlie. No doubt after the discussion we had and I have

seen it now with my own two eyes. This was fine for what it's worth, but the

final install must be from scratch.

OT: Heat? Re: Windows Activation issue.

Hi, Tony.

You keep mentioning the heat. Where (in the world) did you move to? From

Denmark, right?

How hot is hot? Here in Central Texas we've broken heat records just about

every day for the past week. Austin was 106F today, breaking the old record

for the date of 102F. (That's about 41C and 39C, I think.) We've been 100F

or higher for about 15 of the last 16 days (fell to 98F one day to cool us

off). And it's not yet July! Hottest day ever here was 112F - in September

2000! Is that hot?

Re: OT: Heat? Re: Windows Activation issue.

Yes, not quite that hot here, I confess. I shouldn't complain - it's just

that I can't stop thinking about that particularly hot place that is

mentioned in several of our important religions. I'm the sort of person who

likes snow and ice. In sunlight anything over 10C is too hot, in the evening

18C is really nice but at 24C the fun bit stops no matter the time or

conditions. For the last week or so we've had from 27 - 30C and this being

on the coast which means 'humidity', that makes it hot. Right now, at 11AM

we're having some 23C (and rising) and that feels somewhat agreeable now

with a faint wind and a veil of cloud to it.

I should be living on a mountain where the air is dry, that sort of takes

away the impact of changing conditions.

I once had a BMW twin (MC) that I drove to Yugoslavia in the summer of -82

and we had 4 days with 44C and that very nearly killed me off, so at 30C I

start panicking.

The thing with the arctic climate is you don't need a meteorologist or a

thermometer - you look out the window and it's obvious how you need to

dress. With heat there is a limit to how much you can take off, and that

limit happens much too soon, you hit it and, even if you go nekkid, the rest

is pain, struggle, no energy to think or eat and complete despair (although

I usually put up a good fight with that)

The hardest bit is that after some ten days the body adjusts and you stop

thinking so much about it, but then it gets colder again which also isn't so

nice then.

If you zoom in on Sweden and type [Lane Ryr, Uddevalla] in your google earth

you should get a close-up of the general area, the big lake is Vänern (the

fourteenth biggest lake in the world I am told. Big enough that a Geologist

recognizes it as an Inland (or Continental?) Ocean, and at this time we have

complete darkness only for a maximum of 1 hour around midnight and that

really is a bonus.

(If you have the Flightsimulator, there is a local airport (ESGT) 30 - 40

minutes away from here.)

Re: OT: Heat? Re: Windows Activation issue.

Tony,

I share you feelings about what is hot down here in summer.

It is as if you had to add 10C to the temperature reading in the thermometer

in order to make it sense.

Let's say, 10C down here feels as hot as 20C in the civilized world.

We are now in winter and the temperature is above zero!

I have had to turn down the heating because I was melting inside my house.

Maybe in these extreme latitudes that 0.5C of worldwide average temperature

increase gets its peaks.

I'd dare to say that down here the avg temp has increased 5C.

We eve don't have ice in the streets during winter.

Re: OT: Heat? Re: Windows Activation issue.

That is precisely how it is. Latitude and humidity rules our level of

discomfort.

And driving on ice and hard packed snow is infinitely much safer than

driving on sleet.

Re: OT: Heat? Re: Windows Activation issue.

Agreed. Down here we use special pneumatics for driving on ice.

There are two types.

1.- What we call tires with nails (or pins).

2.- The "silicone" tires which have a sucking effect when temperature of the

road drops below 5C (those are the ones I use). Someone told me that these

are the ones used in Europe.

Hi, Tony.

Sweden!? I thought you must have gone to India - or Brazil! 30C? Let's

see, 30 / 5 = 6 * 9 = 54 + 32 = 86F! That's PERFECT! I'll trade you my

106F and throw in a pitcher of iced tea! ; mentioned in several of our important religions. I'm the sort of person

Re: OT: Heat? Re: Windows Activation issue.

It is extremely varied what they use in Europe, in central EU the spikes are

generally forbidden, except in the Alps. In Scandinavia we generally allow

them in the winter season. In Norway, though, they are mandatory in that

season - you don't get across the border without them and trucks must have

snow-chains with them.

The 'friction' tires or 'all-weather' tires as they are also known are

becoming more popular since they are allowed across seasons and the

conditions change quite a lot over reasonably short distances, which all

keeps down the expense.

Of course, in true winter conditions we may have the top performing

non-spiked snow tire you can ever dream of, it's a Nokia (formerly

Hakkapällitää, from Finland) that most rally drivers have been using since

before the friction stuff. I drove them once and you can never believe what

they were capable of without trying. But, as always, it comes with a cost,

they will probably not last you a full season, but they'll keep you on the

road.

Re: OT: Heat? Re: Windows Activation issue.

I'm sure, had we had a continental climate, it would still be warm but

sufferable. Ice-tea, or not, that is not my cup.

W7U I already had downloaded, just burned and installed the wrong version

(unmarked disks - couldn't find the CD Marker). Re-installed it last night

and I do like it. For one thing it upped all my index scores to 5,9 except

for the memory score which is 7,1 (looks and feels like a balanced system

with no apparent bottlenecks) - not that it matters, it's the same machine,

and I am comfortable with it.

I really, really like the Newsreader, the small changes are nearly all for

the better, there was one thing I scuffed at, but I don't remember now.

Thank you for challenging me on that.
