BeeCeeBee Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 As a Yank living almost full time in Europe and a bit tired from watching a debate that started at 2 AM I just want to know if anyone would like to contribute to a thread about the BIG RACE. I am as opinionated as hell but have no particular desire to go on a rant if no one is interested. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Guest Wolfeymole Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Seth will have plenty to say, I just hope you can counter any debate that occurs. Quote

Seth Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I do have strong opinions in regards to general politics and certain aspects of democracy. However, i don't know enough specifics about the US to make any debatable comments. Neither candidate impresses me, and I think Obama comes across as a televangelist. BeeCeeBee Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 I just spent at least 15 minutes creating a post here and the page just refreshed and returned to here. I don't know if I hit a key without noticing or whether it just does that after a while but I have lost the impulse to repeat it. I will reduce it to one sentance. Sarah Palin scares the hell out of me and the fact that McCain (who I was considering supporting) would choose her makes it clear that he will put his election above the good of the country and perhaps the worls. He is 72 years old, not to old to be president but old enough to be very very careful of who he picks to hang around if he doesn't. I have no problem with a woman as President and supported Hillary Clinton. (3 sentences actually) Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Guest Wolfeymole Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Barry the forum timeout, ie, no activity, page refresh, posting etc is 15 minutes or to be more precise 900 seconds. The fact that you are composing a post is irrelevant. Type faster. :p Quote
Seth Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Been there, done that. That's why I right click and copy my post before clicking submit. Anyway, Damn it Wolfey. I'll bite. A briefing of NA government: - Claim that you'll fix everything with grandiose promises and money. The public is too stupid to realize that "government money" is generated from the taxpayer. The average tax payer thinks that government pays for things by printing money. That's why you will always here "a congress bail out", instead of "the working folk will pay and suffer for this". - Get your party to buy out the media and spread your propaganda. It's a good financial and political gamble, as only about 10% of the population will see through you. - Now that you're elected on your lies, do nothing and wait. In a couple of years you can retire on the "Golden handshake". Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. BeeCeeBee Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 So how about them mapleleafs?? Glad its not a pc problem. So if I gather what you are saying, you have no strong convictions! :D I have been around long enough to be even more cynical then you and happily I don't think I really am. I remember when we were told not to vote for Bobby Kennedy because he was too ambitious. He was running for President of the United States that kind of requires a certain degree of ambition. The all have it it is how they use it and to what ends that count. Someone has to run government, any government, I just hope it is going to be someone smart enough to do reasonably well. If they can and do I am not all that concerned about personal ambition. By the way, what is NA government. Ohhh ANY government? Just got that or am I wrong. BeeCeeBee Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 Dalo, you should. We are experiencing what happens when politicians lose track of what is going on around them. We have deregulated ourselves into an econmic nightmare, but hey, the surge is working in Iraq. Ain't that great. Nobody claims to have cared much about politics in Germany of the 1930's (no im not that old.) Maybe they were not lying and they just didn't. So they got what they got and the whole world paid the price. You may not want politics to matter but it does. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Dalo Harkin Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 it makes no difference who runs a country in my opinion - they all have their own agendas and what they want to accomplish and none of them give a **** what happens as long as they achive their own persoanl goals in the meantime Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Seth Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I pay no attention to American politics or British for that matter - I suspect you do so as you don't believe that are "Employees" (government) have the bread winner in mind...other than taking more money from them to appease the ignorant. Dale, you go to work, support your family, and just want peace. That's not unlike most of us. But, our employers (MP's) can retire on the hundreds of thousands they receive in severance even if they don't get re-elected. Let's also not forget that they'll do so while letting a high risk offender be a threat to your family. It's OK because they let them reside into such low life communities as ours. Do you ever see the media ask the parole board if the latest repeat pedophile they released can be trusted to babysit their own kids? **** no, but they can babysit yours. BeeCeeBee Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 It seems to me that you are both missing the point. Now I know that an old guy like me must have lost the plot a long time ago so why listen. I once watched a tv show (I think it was JAG or some other highbrow drama) and an old guy asked the young one "do you know what it feels like to be 70? The answer was no. And the reply was yes you do because it feels the same as it does when you are 20. or something like that. The fact is that you are disappointed that politicians are not pure of heart so to hell with all of them. Frankly that is a lot of bull. If you are a sports fan do you really care whether your favorite player honed his skills for the money or the glory of the team. Do you care if the great actor in a movie took the part in order to entertain you or for the money. ETC ETC The only thing that you should really care about is whether you liked the film, if your team is winning and so on/ One of our better presidents was Bill Clinton. Aside from the obvious diversion he did a pretty good job, Do I think he is a great guy? Do I Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
BeeCeeBee Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 Didnt finish Do I not for a minute think that what he was looking for was a really great life for himself after it was all over. Or that he wanted to be loved by all etc. The thing is he knew what was needed to be done and did it. He may not even be a good guy but he was a good president. You are both intelligent guys who have mastered some of the most complicated stuff going. I dont mean that to be patronising either. But allowing your anger at the status quo to avoid learning where the alternatives lie or who in politics can make things better is short sighted. There are good leaders out there and where there is a choice one is usually better than the other. Everything can be fixed. You are to young to give up so easily. This is not the way I thought this thread would go but it does concern me. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Dalo Harkin Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 As Seth has said the 'Government' especially in my country are a JOKE, I have no problem with people from other countries coming into ours - providing that they are here to work........ Hmmm how many of a percentage actually do that - I was reading in the paper the other day that a SINGLE woman (from another country) was allowed into Britain and the local council decided fit to shack her up in a 7 room house that cost the Council 12K a Month  and this went on for about 3 years - 3 YEARS! WTF - so no one thought that it was strange that a single woman was in a 7 bed house and that house was costing 12K a month! and as for the American government - I approve of all the wars that they have been involved in  Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
BeeCeeBee Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 I think you should probably get a better government. (Hmm Wonder how you do that!) As for me Im just going to sit here and hum the theme from "Patton." Unfortuatly I dont know the one from "Rambo.":D Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
RandyL Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 I prefer the theme from The Green Berets. :) Seriously though. I usually don't get too involved in discussions on religion and politics on the forum but I will make a comment this time. I have been voting since the days of Jimmy Carter in 1976. They had just recently lowered the voting age just in time for me to vote. The youth of that time were instrumental in getting the age lowered and I was proud to have a say in government. The world was a different place then and nothing would have changed if not for active voters. Of course not all the changes have been good but I can't imagine living in a 1976 world today. Voter education is the most important thing to institute meaninful change. As a 30 year Union Worker we worked hard to do just that. Unfortunately many voters are uneducated and have always chosen feel good politics or short sighted solutions instead of researching and getting involved. Politicians know this and prey on those sentiments to get elected because We The People have fallen into that due to our self centered short sighted personal agendas. If you want government to be better you have to get involved. Learn, teach run for office. In the name of God do something or nothing will change. All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. BeeCeeBee Posted October 17, 2008 Author Posted October 17, 2008 I was trying for a clever reply but decided to just let your words stand. Voting is the simplest thing anyone can do to help initiate changes in policies that you don't like. People that say that "they are all the same, so why vote?" are usually the loudest voices when it is time to *****. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Dalo Harkin Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 You are missing a vital point - people complain about the people that run Governments (me included, I do not deny that) - but how do you know that the next person that gets elected is any better - Take Bush for example - what a warmonger just like his father and ask yourself if Clinton was still president would you have all the issues that you have now or not? Guest Wolfeymole Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 Personally I preferred good old Ronnie. YouTube - Ronald Reagan - Nuclear Tests - Parody Spitting Image Quote
RandyL Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 I think you miss the point Dave. We never will know for sure but we can always pressure them by demanding with our votes that ALL our elected officials do the right thing. By doing nothing we allow special interest groups or the vocal uneducated majority to rule us. I would rather fight for my rights then let them rule my life and my childrens lives. If you don't like the status quo fight to make a difference as I have all my life. As for Clinton and Bush or any other politician I have very strong opinions on all of them. However that's another story. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else.
