Why would I want a per device CAL?

Wouldn't per device CALs be more restrictive than per user CALs?

Sounds like a per device CAL means that the user would have to create a TS

session from the same computer every single time, right?

You would want a Per Device CAL when you have more users

than devices connecting to your server. Think of the three shift

scenario below:

100 PCs

300 Users (100 x 3 shifts)

For Per Device you would need to purchase 100 CALs whereas

for Per User you would need to purchase 300 CALs.

You would want a Per User CAL when you have more devices

than users connecting to your server. Think of the scenario below

where users access the TS from inside or outside of the office:

100 Users

100 Office PCs (each employee has one)

100 Home PCs (each employee has one)

25 Notebook PCs (some employees use them while traveling)

For Per User you would need to purchase 100 CALs whereas

for Per Device you would need to purchase 225 CALs.

I support a Hospice in upstate NY. We have about 75

workstations/laptops. We have 125+ users. Most of our nurses use shared

workstations. Per Device would cost significantly less than Per User

licenses
