computer freezes

On a new pc running Win XP pro, with all current updates, the computer

freezes on trying to use the new keyboard in an application. Tested on IE and

Notepad with the same outcome.

On start up everything seems to be normal, mouse is responding, etc.

However, when using keyboard, everything freezes, and the computer is not

reacting to both mouse and keyboard. Rebooting is the only way to have it

working. The strange thing is that it works fine with an old keyboard. I have

replaced the keyboard with another one of the same type (form the vendor) and

the same thing happens.

New keyboard: MS Digital Media Keyboard 1.0A, MS part # X809745-100

Old keyboard (working): MS Internet Keyboard model RT9410 v.56TW, MS part #

X04-B4530

Although I am taking the box back to the vendor to fix it, I am curious what

is going on. I’ve tried to lower hardware acceleration one notch down, no

difference.

Any suggestion?

Better not to mess up with this machine if under warranty and going back

Home!!.

It could be a third-party application incompatible or damaged Hardware

driver on your machine, also an infection Viral or None-viral?.

The below just to look or your Vendor will moan and groan and you know the

rest?.

= Click Start >> Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections >> Double

click Internet Options.

On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:

General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |

Advanced.

Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.

Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:

[&] Browsing

[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.

[ ] Disable script Debugging (internet Explorer) <= check this box

[ ] Disable Script Debugging (Other) <= check this box

Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all none

Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the

culprit and update it or remove it.

How to manage Add-Ons:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256

Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it

later for this step to copy the error message on it.

Open a run command and type in:

eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.

click on each of these:

Application

System

Security

Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow

exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the

causer.

On the Event error properties message you will see:

Up Arrow

Down arrow

Two pages

Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad

you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from

the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.

Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Re: computer freezes

The old is ps2 (if that is a small round plug), the new is usb. However, it

hasn't made any diffrerence whether the keyboard was connected to an usb port

or via an adapter to this small round socket. Purple, if I remember well.

The computer is with the vendor (as it was brand new) and they are trying to

fix it. It looks as something was wrong with drivers.

RE: computer freezes

Thank you Nass. I have figured out that this is beyond me and I took the box

back to the vendor. They are good and dependable people. By far better than

the big box guys.

In device manager all usb root hubs were marked with yellow question marks,

whatever it means.

RE: computer freezes

It may be of interest to readers of this discussion group that my problem has

eventually been traced down to power supply (sic!). After replacing the power

supply with a new unit, everything seems to work ok now. Needless to say that

I do not understand it at all. However, I learnt long time ago that it was

impossible to understanding everything.
