MS suggests BIOS upgrade

Recommended Posts

My pc restarts itself - sent error message and MS came back suggesting

"consider BIOS upgrade" saying it couldnt determine exact cause but noticing

that BIOS system version on my pc doesnt match spec for CPU etc. This is a

Tiny PC on which nothing has been changed so dont understand?

Do I need a BIOS upgrade and if so who/how do I go about it. Hope you can

help. Thanks

I of course have no idea about whether or not you need to update the BIOS.

However, there were updates for many BIOS which were required by XP (not

certain what changes were needed though).

You get all BIOS updates from the BIOS manufacturer.

Be careful here; it is very easy to conver the computer to a doorstop while

updating the BIOS.

RE: MS suggests BIOS upgrade

I have recently upgraded my bios on a couple of machines. Both of these had

floppy drives attached which helped. These guidelines assume you do, too.

This is not a full How-To, just my recollection of how I did it.

You need to know your existing BIOS manufacturer / version. (This is usually

displayed on PC's on booting)

Then search for 'upgrade <bios manufacturer name> <version number>' using

your favourite search engine. When you find it, download it and save to

floppy.

Check that your floppy drive is set to boot before your hard drive (or other

devices). You can usually do this by pressing F2 when booting. Look all

around the boot up screen, it usually tells you how to get to 'settings' or

'boot options' or whatever.

Having set the floppy to boot first, restart your system. It should install

your new bios. Then remove the floppy and restart again.

Hope this helps. Good luck

Re: MS suggests BIOS upgrade

If Tiny is still in business, contact them about a BIOS upgrade. It can be

dangerous to use an upgrade provided by the BIOS manufacturer. If you do

attempt an upgrade, make sure the PC is on an uninterrupted power supply as

a surge/sag/outage while doing the update can toast the BIOS.

Re: MS suggests BIOS upgrade

I thought I'd heard that Tiny was kaput :-( The only thing you can do is

try whatever upgrade is provided by the BIOS manufacturer and hope that it

works OK.

Hi Mary

I guess from the fact that you have a Tiny computer that you're in the

UK, like me :-)

You could try emailing Minster Computer Services in Nottingham, whose

website says they repair/upgrade Tiny machines. The email address is

info@minstercomputers.com,

website http://www.minstercomputers.com

I have no personal knowledge of this company -- I just found them on the

web -- so it'd be a good idea to check them out before sending off your

'puter or paying any money, but it's worth a try.
