I really didn't know whether to put this in XP, vista or here :P

about 6 months ago I aquired this laptop which has vista on it, whereas my old PC has XP, and the same again for my brother, his new PC has vista, his laptop has XP.

the problem we both have is trying to transfer files across from the old XP systems to the new Vista ones. I know vista comes with its easy file transfer thing, which can be installed manually onto the XP machines which is all fine but when we try to connect the two PCs and transfer stuff, it says that it cannot find any other PCs on the network? :S when if we go onto the network window on vista is shows both machines and the same on the XP one. :S

Would it also have anything to do with then we use the network cable to connect the PCs, it says "Limited or No connectivity"? I assumed this was normal as I thought this just meant it isnt connected to the internet which isn't needed :D

Can anyone throw any light on this problem?

the furthest stage we've gotten to, is to be able to see the machines on both pcs and we can see the "shared documents" files and also access the WMP files/music from both. but it still wont let us transfer the files using the vista program D:

:(

Thanks!

feel free to ask for any more info! :D

Thanks Wolfy, but i've alreayd tried that route, not with the Easy Tranfer Cable but using a "small office or home network"

when you run the easy transfer option in vista it lets you copy the software to a USB so it can be installed on the XP machine, when it's installed it asks for a key thats given on the vista machine, then when entered it proceeds to check the network for the pc you want to transfer stuff to, but my problem is it cant find the PC, whereas i know its there because you can see it under the network window.

:(

I dont really feel like going to buy that cable, i'd much rather buy an external HDD and just copy onto there really because that will be more useful in the future aswell.

Yeah my brother bought one today so I'll steal his for now :P

the only other option, which would be anightmare is because it can only see the shared documents, was to copy and paste the whole My docs folder to the shared documents and then again to the vista machine but trying to copy and paste 50GB is not really fun... its worse than watching the world's slowest drying paint dry :P

Hi,

If you connect two PC's with a network cable, it has to be a crossover cable - the standard cable , a patch cable is not a crossover. Also, your two PC's will need to be manually assigned an IP address. Say 192.168.1.13, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and 192.168.1.14, same subnet mask.

Normally a router would do that for you. I think also (will have to check) that they need to be in the same Workgroup - ie MSHOME or WORKGROUP.

The easy way to do it is to plug both PC's into the LAN sockets of a router, any router, with standard patch cables let the router connect them and work from there. No Internet connection is required so I guess you could maybe borrow one for a day.

Failing that, do you have an external hard drive, Easy Transfer Wizard works very well with an external drive.

Hope that helps,

Tootech.

Yeah it helps but i've tried all that :( and yes they have to be in the same workgroup, and i've only ever used a cross over cable.

I'm guessing my only option left is with an external HDD, so yeah, thanks for helping though! :D

Another option is a memory stick or pen, transfer your files to the stick, on one machine, then plug it into the other and transfer again. If you already have a camera or other device, that can use the larger SD flash memory cards, (mine are 2GB), and also a separate card reader, in most cases they can be used instead of a memory stick.
