You said you "tried" to install the latest driver. *Did* you in fact install it? Is it Version 0639 (8/26/02)? Did you try downloading it from http://www.download.com/CMI8738-WDM-Driver/3000-2120-10495782.html It looks like the compressed file is: CMI8738_WDM_0639XP.zip You will need to expand it first.

Guest Daave Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Re: After reformat the hard disk and reinstall the window xp Go to Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices. Go to the Audio tab. What is the default device for sound playback? Are there other options in the drop-down window? And what is the default device for MIDI music playback? And are there other options in the drop-down window? Also you may want to use Belarc Advisor to determine if there is more than one sound card causing a conflict. You may download it from: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html When you run the profile, what is listed under Multimedia? Wipe drive, install XP SP2, install chipset drivers, install NIC drivers, Windows update. The cmedia drivers should have been on the disk with the chipset drivers. There will be (should be) a Cmedia driver on windows update under hardware. Also check in the BIOS setup to make sure the onboard audio is enabled.
