Guest Roy Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Hello Folks, Just recently I heard from somebody that slow response of the PC is partly due to errors in the registry, I want toknow if there is a way to identify /correct such errors in a safe manner, DIY,,or is there such tutorial for such? Guest Script Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 RE: Correcting Errors in Registry The average user will SUFFER from trying to make "corrections" to the registry, particularly when using an "automatic" registry cleaner. Most will get improved performance by learning to use the Disk Cleanup tool and then the Disk Defragmenter tool, both found under: Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools Run the cleanup, and then the defrag. How to's: http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_defragmenter_utility.htm "Roy" wrote: > Hello Folks, > Just recently I heard from somebody that slow response of the PC is > partly due to errors in the registry, I want toknow if there is a way > to identify /correct such errors in a safe manner, DIY,,or is there > such tutorial for such? > My PC OS is WinXP Sp2... > TIA > >

There can be many reasons for a slow computer - virus/malware infection, too many legitimate but unnecessary programs running in the background, failing hardware, etc. etc. To troubleshoot your problem: 1. First make sure the computer is clean - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware 2. If the computer is clean, trim your startup - http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm - What loads at Startup? http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html 3. Do maintenance - Slow or Sluggish Computer: http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm http://aumha.org/a/health.htm - Take Out the Trash 4. If the software looks good, test the hardware, particularly checking to see if the hard drive is in PIO mode: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10 (MVP Hans-Georg Michna on PIO/DMA mode) Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Have all your data backed up before taking the machine into a shop. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User

They were wrong. When the registry is accessed, it takes microseconds - and the registry is usually only accessed once or twice per executable job.

Leave the registry alone. It's very unlikely to need any such correction, and anything you attempt to do to it, unless you are very skilled in these things, is more likely to create a problem than correct one. If you are experiencing problems, describe them here, and someone here can likely help. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup
