Guest hjacobson Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 The most curious thing; using Vista Ultimate I burned a 6GB file to a DVD+R DL. In Vista's 'Burn a Disc' 'Prepare this blank disc' window I chose 'Mastered - Readable on all computers and some CD/DVD players. Requires you to write all files at once, and individual files can't be erased afterwards.' The burn appeared to complete successfully. On my Vista computer I re-insert the disc. The directory displays. In attempting to drag the file to a folder on the HDD the process hangs. In the Command Prompt window running a comp returns 'Can't read file'. My XP computer has no problem reading the file! A comp on the XP computer indicates the file was burned perfectly. I can't spend time on this problem. Any ideas what's the problem? Thank you, Harry

You should ask your question in a vista group where you are likely to find more help that is specific to the platform that is causing you grief. As you mentioned you are not having a problem with XP. -- Harry Ohrn MS MVP [shell\User] http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp "hjacobson" <harry.jacobson@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1190120319.647420.71230@y42g2000hsy.googlegroups.com... > The most curious thing; using Vista Ultimate I burned a 6GB file to a > DVD+R DL. > > In Vista's 'Burn a Disc' 'Prepare this blank disc' window I chose > 'Mastered - Readable on all computers and some CD/DVD players. > Requires you to write all files at once, and individual files can't > be > erased afterwards.' The drive in one is better than the drive in the other - no matter which burned the Dual Layer DVD... -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

The laser in the Vista machine's DVD drive is not as healthy as the laser in the XP machine and can't resolve the image. 2. The disk is burned in an invalid format. Some DVD burning programmes either default to or can be switched to burn in CDFS format. Virtually every drive just treats a single layer disk in CDFS as a very large CD, so there is no problem. But when it comes to dual layer, many drives know that there is no such thing as a dual layer CD disks and will refuse to read them, or at least all of them. Some drives will read the first layer of the disk but not the second.

Depending on the drive model, firmware level, burning speeds and DVD media quality, you can get these type of problems. Step to try to insure good burns: 1) Clean the drive laser lens (CD/DVD lens cleaner CD) 2) Check for updates, both CD/DVD burning software and drive firmwares. 3) Use good quality CD/DVD media. Look around the web for recommendations. Cheap medias are a "pita" problem waiting to happen. 4) If you want to burn an important disk, use a lower burning speed. The lower burning speed should insure a better read later.
Guest hjacobson Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 Re: DVD+R DL burned in Vista, unreadable in Vista, readable in XP! I've read the 4 replies to date. (A) To Shenan Stanley: Perhaps. The Vista machine has a Panasonic UJ-85J-BK. The XP machine has an LG GSA-4167B. Maybe the Panasonic drive in the Vista machine has a problem. This is the first time the problem's surfaced; It's burned a lot of single layer DVDs. (B) To Harry Ohrn: I did ask the same question in microsoft.public.windows.vista.general; similar responses. Be that as it may I think the problem has to do with differences in behavior between XP and Vista. There is to my knowledge no forum that deals with both OSs at this level. © To M.I.5¾: Re point (1) Maybe laser in Vista machine is not healthy. But it had no problem reading and comparing the same 6GB file burned in XP to a DVD+R DL disc. Re point (2) The burn program is native Vista. 'Mastered' mode should burn to UDF format. Vista should read what it burns. XP properties state the Vista burned disc is UDF formatted, same as the UDF formatted Nero 7 Ultra DVD+R DL disc burned in XP. (D) To smlunatick: You're correct in all your points. I'll procure the best DVD+R DL media I can find. I'll clean the Vista drive. I'll post results. Don't hold your breath; this problem is low on my to do list. Thank you all, Harry

I've read the 4 replies to date. © To M.I.5¾: Re point (1) Maybe laser in Vista machine is not healthy. But it had no problem reading and comparing the same 6GB file burned in XP to a DVD+R DL disc. It should be bourne in mind that the laser power required to read a disk is much less than that required to write it. Even if the read laser is operating at (say) 70% efficiency, it should have little difficulty reading a good data track. However, a write laser operating at 70% efficiency may well, at worst, fail to write a track at all and at best write a track where some of the data bits are too faint to be reliably read. It is for this reason that the write reliability of DVD writer drives falls off before they become unable to read discs (though the variability does rise somewhat). Looking at your responses to the various contributors, I would be inclined to try a different DVD writer with your Vista machine (you could temporarily swap them) and see if it makes a difference.
