Very slow file delete in Windows XP Pro

Deleting even a small file takes several minutes. The recycle bin is empty.

This is not a right-click context handler issue. Deletes are slow regardless

of the method by which file(s) or folder(s) are deleted.

Windows Explorer seems to lock up and even attempting to kill it with Task

Manager takes a long time. Eventually, if I let it sit long enough, the

file(s) get deleted.

This problem only appears on one user login (mine with admin rights). File

deletes with other user logins (also admins) are fast.

Any ideas how to pinpoint this problem?

Click Ctrl+Shift+Esc and have a look at the Performance

tab. Is the CPU running flat out at 100%?

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile

Re: Very slow file delete in Windows XP Pro

CPU usage is 1%-2%. In Apps tab it says the {folder name} from which I am

trying to delete files is not responding, but then it eventually deletes the

files and all returns to normal.

How many files are you trying in one operation? How large are these

files?

The behavior is the same whether it is one very small file or multiple files

of varying sizes. Files size or number of files seem to have no bearing on

the issue.

Other operation such as copy and move are fast. This is only a deletion

problem

Re: Very slow file delete in Windows XP Pro

I suppose I could try recreating my profile and moving files although I am

not sure my profile is "corrupt." Nothing other than this delete issue is a

problem with the current profile. Logging in, switching between profiles,

accessing profile-specific data, etc. all works as expected. Anything is

worth a try.

Re: Very slow file delete in Windows XP Pro

Any perceptible when you use Shift+Del instead of moving the file to the

Recycle Bin? How full is the Recycle Bin?

Re: Very slow file delete in Windows XP Pro

Same issues with Shift+Del. The recycle bin is virtually empty (5 small

files).

Re: Very slow file delete in Windows XP Pro

You said that the phenomenon does not occur when deleting from other

profiles!

Re: Very slow file delete in Windows XP Pro

That is correct. There are three user profiles on this machine. Only mine

has the file delete problem. The other two work as expected and delete files

very quickly.
