Hi all ,

How are you? :)

My problem is this:- I have backed up all my photos onto CD discs (I even have copies of them). Now, I cannot open all the files on two of my five discs. Before I upgraded my computer, (same OS, XP home), I went into disc info and change the volume settings for me to view another section of the disc, no problem. But now?? I can't do that!!

Can any one :help: me, please?

Thank you , John

Hello John

Welcome to FPCH

Can you right click on any one of the files and then choose properties and tell us what that says please.

It sounds like these pics were created using a file format that you no longer have.

Agreed - people normally use whatever is on their system and 9 times out of 10 its software that comes with their printer - HP for example and if you have not installed that software for the pronter then the files will appear to be in an unknown format.

Hi,

That was a quick reply. Thanks.

After clicking properties I get four tabs; General, Autoplay, Hardware & Sharing.

I have five copy discs. 1>4 done on my old computer, 1&4 open fine i.e. shows all, but not 2&3.

Right click on any file that you cannot access John and as I have said before choose Properties.

Then hit the Prt Scr button on your keyboard, go into Paint which all versions of windows have and hit Ctrl + V

Save the image as .jpeg or .png and add it into your next reply in Manage Attachments.

When I open an offending disc only some of the files open, the rest do not even show, in any form. As far as the computer is concerned, that's all.(but the disc is full). So I can't right click on the files that do not open.

Put the disk in the cdrom drive and if any pop up boxes open shut them.

Double click Computer and then right click on the cdrom drive with the disk in and click Explore

Pick a file and right click and choose Properties.

Tell us what the file format says in in that like .jpeg etc.

Odd question maybe, but when you upgraded your computer did you replace the CD/DVD drive?

Nice catch.

It may be possible that the read/write head on your old CD drive was slightly out of alignment. That means that anything written on that drive can be read by that drive perfectly well. When trying to read your old CD's on a new drive, it may struggle.

The best option is to try to use the old CD drive to read the files. If that works, then I would suggest one of the following:

If your old PC is still in one piece you could put your CD's back in and copy your piccies over to a USB drive.

If not, it maybe easier to connect your old CD drive into the system you have now and copy everything over.

Hope that makes some sense.

Hi,

Yes that makes sense and I understand it, BUT.... my old PC has been recycled and is no longer with me.

Is my situation getting worse?

The cds may work on another computer. If so, you can copy the files onto that computer, then re-burn them.
